Appreciation of the Hold Steady thready

Being a connoisseur of avant-garde music as well as a former college radio DJ leads a person to prefer listening to the non-commercial local university stations instead of WWeSoundLikeEveryoneElse - FM. My two favorite local stations here are WREK / Georgia Tech (91.1 FM) and WRAS / Georgia State (88.5 FM) University. As the slogan for one of the stations says "Left on the dial, right on the music." While listening to both recently I have heard a tune by The Hold Steady called "Stay Positive" and liked the sound of it. So if the local big box has their new one it must be in my disc player soon. It will make the show all the better when they open for DBT. Can't wait for the show at The Tabernacle.

I'm kinda with the lackluster reviews I've read. I like the Hold Steady, but the new one is just a little bland, I think. Even "Stay Positive," with those "whoa oh ohs" is a little too…meh. Hard to top the last two albums, IMO.

contructive summer is the only song on the new one that really stands out to me as great.

Slapped Actress is a great song from the new album…

I love that one and "Slapped Actress" a lot. Also, the three bonus songs at the end. So yeah, definitely not their best output, but still good.

The Hold Steady are one of a handful, if that, bands that will hold their own live with the "Mighty" DBT. I've had the pleasure of seeing them numerous times in diverse venues including a Masonic Lodge about a mile from my house. They do not disappoint whether it's for 30 people or 5,000 people. They look to have the staying power to become a career band. As for their recorded work, all 4 are worth having in your collection. But if you have to pick one "Boys and Girls in America" is one of the essential listens of the 21st Century.

Go get all of their shit. Today. Fantastic. Incredible lyrics. Arena size guitars. DBT of the suburbs. Lots of locations & proper names

It's currently #27 on my decade list. Their other albums don't even come close to the top 100 cutoff.

May I ask for your top 5, Charlie? I feel like you and I have a lot of the same tastes in music.

Their show at Ram's Head Live a little while back was very mediocre I thought. I'd been on the fence about them for a long time and that show pushed me right into the "wow this band is over-hyped" side.

i was at that show and thought it was fantastic..better than the one at 930 a little while back.

While this is technically about the Drive By TRuckers, though t I'd add it to the list, since the bands are in bed with each other.

I would like to just put it out there that the best fucking band is
