Som Records owner Neal Becton djs WFTBO this Fri!

Hey gang,

So have you been to Som Records yet? It's pretty much right next to Cafe St. Ex at the intersection of T and 14th St NW but you gotta look down—it's a cozy little basement shop that's easy to miss if you're driving.

One of the great things about the DC area from a music fan's perspective is that—somehow, against all odds, we have managed to keep nearly all of our ma & pa record shops open and thriving since around 2004 (a testament to the passion of this city's music fans we'd like to think). One of our favorites in this town is the aforementioned Som Records, owned by Neal Becton.

Needless to say, my dj partner Brandon Grover and myself have both picked up some amazing records at Som and we urge you to stop by and support the shop. Hell, just pop in and have a look—you never know what you'll find. Seems like Neal always has quality stuff coming in…

This Friday at the Marx Cafe, Brandon and I are pleased to welcome Neal Becton—er, I mean DJ Neville C, behind the turntable booth for some Belgian beer-stained post-punk, off-kilter pop fun. Neal is a huge fan of post-punk, DIY indie and all manners of weird and wonderful pop music and we are stoked he will be joining us.

We hope you will be there!

Dj Neville C rawks!
Hey gang,

Chiming in with more than just our usual last-minute shout out about tonight's festivities. Lots of exciting stuff happening and about to happen. Of course, tonight we're over the moon about Som Records owner Neal (aka DJ Neville C) spinning all manners of weird and wonderful oddball pop, post-punk and diy goodness with us. We start spinning shortly after 10 and keep the tunes going until 3am! As usual, Marx Cafe's charming and ridiculously attractive bartenders will be offering a tasty selection of Belgian libations and other refreshments…

How many of you were lucky enough to see Love Is All back when they played DC9 a few years ago? It was an incredible show and those fortunate enough to be at said event know full well that this band is a mighty force to be reckoned with live. The good news is that they're coming back and will be playing the Black Cat next Wednesday! Brandon and I will even be bringing records to spin before, inbetween and after the bands. Who says the middle of the week can't be crazy good fun?

Wed., June 11:

One of the questions we get more than any other: Can you recommend a really good record? The answer is always yes, but as you can imagine, Brandon and I often recommend different things.

Now, here's one release we are both equally giddy about and offer our highest recommendation to: The Lines "Memory Span," a collection of this great London-based post-punk band's singles, EPs and even a couple demos. As one of our all-time favorite artists of any era, The Lines are no stranger to regular attendees of WFTBO—we've been playing their records nearly every month since 2004, with their euphoric single "Nerve Pylon" a long-time staple at our humble event (see most recent setlist below). Seems like we're always fielding the same questions whenever we play them: "Who was that amazing song by? Where can I buy that record?" Thanks to Dan Selzer and the fine folks at Acute Records, you don't have to contend with collector's prices to obtain those singles. Find out more about the band and "Memory Span" here: http://acuterecords.com/blog/. Listen to 30 second samples and buy here: www.amazon.com. And look for my interview with Lines vocalist, guitarist, trombonist (!), chief songwriter and all-around sound maven Rico Conning to run this coming Monday over here: www.brightestyoungthings.com

Also, heads up about a change in schedule to the 2-hour weekly internet radio edition of WFTBO. The same show airs twice a week: Friday's at 8pm EST and then a repeat on Tuesday at noon EST. Check out the full schedule of shows on the Air-Atlantic station here:
