One could only hope that an author as brilliant as Irvine Welsh could not waste my time pointing out the obvious. I implore you to find one American who actually thinks that football (or soccer) in America is better than Britain. the truth is Americans don't care - that would have made a better article - Why Americans Don't Care About Their Tootball, by Irvine Welsh.
errr Vansmack its obvious if you go to football matches in america. So as Irvine Welsh writes for a British daily, I would say 99% of its readership have not done that.

So I think you should try and be a little more empathetic .

I liked the comments about americans always saying somethings better in America, but Welsh does it about scotland.

His point is NOT that he didn't like sitting with soccer moms in suburban America watching third-rate clubs, but how the sport in Britain is becoming increasingly sanitized.

That's completely beside the point. I rarely go to an MLS match - I do go to US national team matches and when MLS teams play friendlies against Premiereship teams. I do wake up every saturday and Sunday morning at the crack of dawn to watch the Premiereship however.

Everybody knows that US Professional soccer is crap, and that while our national team keeps improving, it has yet to catch on with the mainstream fans. I would have much rather seen Irvine say here's why nobody in america besides soccer moms likes US Professional Soccer rather than it isn't good because it isn't British (you're point). That article is too easy to write and is pointless and useless.

That's one of his points, but a minor one at that (about two sentences), but he spends 15 paragraphs pointing out the obvious with only one truly fitting sentence about why America doesn't care about football: "But this is football, something too important to be interfered with by people who don't have it in their soul." I just wish he wouldn't have harped on the obvious and spent more time delving into why this is the case after now almost 40 years of the sports saturation.
I read that Steve Nash of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team has a brother who plays on a British soccer team.

What was besides the point?

I enjoyed the article myself.
Football is shite everywhere in the world!
bunch of pussies!
try Rugby or something that requires physical contact and pussies like coke-head Maradona, Zindane-Zindoon (what ever that french queers name is) and Bent-dick like Beckham, would never have even participated because they are fags (not cigarettes for those on this board that are subjects to the Queen) :p
Beckham made it to the New York Times Editorial page today. I had no idea that he was merely a celebrity and, as a soccer player, is a second stringer.

The fact that you thought it was obvious if you attend matches because I haven't watched many US Professional soccer games and I knew what's wrong. So do the British and he pointed in out too when he said the US doesn't take it seriously enough (or have it in their "soul" as he put it.

I thought any monkey writing on a message board (insert your own screenname here: Andrew WK, Markie, Fico) could have written that article full of the obvious problems with American Professional Soccer. I expected more insight from an author that I consider brilliant.
He's Scottish…what the fuck does he know about the game anyway?

Vansmack, hsve you turned stupid? You have watched American soccer, you know what it is like. The vast majority of the target readership probably dont even know there is American soccer. Therefore he is supplying an insite to people who have none.

It is therefore little surprise that as you know all about american soccer find the article trite.

didnt they invent soccer? Or was that golf?……YAWN
The article had a point?

I thought it was just another dull attempt by a brit to claim cultural superiority.

I guess he's lamenting that we don't have drunken hooligans at our soccer games. Although, we have plenty of them at baseball, football, and basketball games. And of course, on campuses after college championships. How come those wankers at Cambridge aren't overturning cars and torching the library after they beat Oxford in the croquet tournament? I guess they have no soul….

Don't undersell the intelligence level of your "mates" back home. They have no problem giving Americans shit about American "soccer" when we visit the UK and have plenty of insight (spelled correctly) as to how bad the US professional game is. To remind everybody "back home" that the US game is passionless and watched by soccer moms is of no use to anyone, except to get a few laughs of ignorant jackasses such as yourself. I can't wait to visit again so every twat that reads the guardian can quote the noted expert, Irvine Welsh, as to how bad the game is. Since you have been far surpassed by America in nearly everything else, the British population has to hang its hat on something, and it does so on football. Well, wooptygoddamndo! Readers looking for real insight would want to know Irvine Welsh's thoughts on why the US professional game is "trite."
The Brits got us beat in the cricket department too. I love those sexy white outfits. Gets me all horny and shit.
No country can beat the yanks at friendly fire though…you lot have a lock on that one.

England beat New Zealand at Rugby, IN NEW ZEALAND…the first time in 30 years. Evidently we're the best in the world at that game as well now. *ho-hum, it's hard to be humble*
What the hell is Welsh writing about US Soccer anyways? Why doesn't he stick to drug addicts and Britpop?

the article is in the Telegraph, Irvine Welsh is a regular columnist. He is teaching in Chicago and supplies insights (thanks for the sp) of America back to Britain. As such comments on soccer are going to be as interesting or dull as anything else.

People laugh or respect American soccer because of the world cup.

I posted the article because of the observation I pointed out earlier and because I wondered if anyone else read Irvines articles. I for one enjoy them.

You misquoted me and obviously dont know what trite means, see above. And if I didnt know all that why would I be living in America, eh?

Vansmack, did you let someone with a logic difficulty in charge of your computer, or are you "just tired today"?
