Yes, it's very nice I'm sure…but if it show's empty they can hardly pull in at the next Texaco up there can they? Wether it shows empty or full, they're basically screwed if they run out of juice…..so why even bother?
theres no refuling stations out in space? seems like there would be. maybe thats just in movies.

Its a device that measures the presure in the tank (more or less) and has something to do with shuting down the burn. Not sure of the fetails but it something about if the burn goes past a certain point we could have another big bang. The gauge is key to shutting down the burn in time. At least thats my take. So its not per 'se a fuel gauge as in reminding them to pull over for a fill up! :cool:

The bigger question is: why do we need the space shuttle?
There's a rather large fuel pump that relies on the fuel gauge to know when to shut off. If it doesn't shut off when the fuel supply is empty, the pump can do bad things. I don't know what, exactly, but overheating and burning up would be a good guess.
Dave Stoller's question is more pertinent. Why the shuttle indeed? There was actually a good commentary on NPR a few days back talking about the shuttle is moving away from NASA's original goal of space exploration. All it seems to do nowadays is ferry stuff to the Int'l Space Station (aka black hole for money) and fix the occassional satellite.
