They will probably be the lumps of coal in a lot of peoples Christmas stockings.

From my experience, more often than not, any given music store plays nothing but crap. Pure crap. (IMHO) Maybe it's just the times I've walked in to various stores but it always sounds like one of two basic choices.

1. Something the manager makes them play to push a small selection of product.
2. Really crappy Alternative ( as if it really suits the word) HFS kind of fair I'm in the store trying to find something better to play in the first place.

One time I went into a Borders trying to find a book. The music that was playing was so nauseating that I had to leave. So I went to the nearby Barnes. They were playing the same shit! I asked someone working there about it and she said it was the (then) new Josh Groban. She didn't like it either (and she was within his demo) but the music was out of her control. Must be hell to work there.
I was in Wegman's last week. They were playing Steely Dan. It was groovy, man.

Rob: I will now sell four copies of "The Three EPs" by The Beta Band.

Dick: Go for it.

[Rob plays the record]

Customer: Who is this?

Rob Gordon: The Beta Band.

Beta Band Customer: It's good.

Rob: I know.
What percentage off are they today?

Anybody have a guess as to the final percentages next week when they all close?
pop/rock was 70% off today in Alexandria. There is literally almost nothing left. I picked up:

Volebeats
Stina Nordenstam ($2!)
Steve Wynn
Long Winters
Solex

They have like 80 copies of the last Futureheads album…
Also, all locations have plenty of copies of the recent TV-musician crossovers (John Corbett, Peter Gallagher, Peter Gammons (!)) Great gag stocking stuffers!
ok the only thing i missed about the forum taking a spa day was if there were any updates on discounts…

so spill
Yesterday at Penn. Ave. cds were 60% off; dvds 50%. Plus a bunch of stuff in the dollar bins.

I managed to get two dvds:

Hawkwind: Love in Space
Cut Shorts: Short Films of David Markey

I also got a Quasi cd for $3 and a Joe "King" Carrasco for a buck.

Very few toys left (50% off). But I did end up buying "The Land of Misfit Toys" set.
Just returned from Foggy Bottom/Penn Tower and rock cds are at 70% off now. The place was packed, but I was pretty surprised at how much was still there. I saw several of the Cure double-disc reissues, which I would've picked up but I have the original albums and am happy with them.

So picked up
Radio 4 - Enemies Like This
The Horror The Horror
Pet Shop Boys - Fundamental
New York Dolls - One Day It Will Please Us…
Grandaddy - Fambly Cat
Turbonegro - Scandinavian Leather
Super Furries - Love Kraft
The Rakes
The 22-20s

I could've got about five more, but I've bought so many discs in the last month that I'm getting some heat at home, no matter how cheap they are.

The staff are getting real punchy. Dudes are flying through crowded aisles pushing empty CD racks, knocking people around. My check-out guy couldn't have been a bigger cock. "Who are all these bands supposed to be?" he dicked.
They all seem to be up to 70%.

I wonder if it will go to 80% or more before the end?
so i have to say, i feel like there is more left at Tower than people are finding.

my haul today - grand total of $120 spent. the list:

Margot & The Nuclear So and So's - The Dust of Retreat
The Kooks - Inside In Inside Out
Ulrich Schnauss - Far Away Trains Passing By
The Sounds - Dying to Say This To You
Field Music - s/t (Import)
Field Music - Write Your Own History (Import)
Electric Eel Shock - Go USA!
The Doors - Live in Philadelphia '70
Matmos - The Rose Has Teeth In The Mouth of a Beast
Mojave Three - Puzzles Like You
The Delgados - The Complete BBC Peel Sessions
Mates of State - Our Constant Concern
Smoosh - Free to Stay
Nethers - In Fields We Will Lie
Antony and the Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now
Aloha - Some Echoes
Sophie & Ives - Untie Me
Longwave - The Strangest Things
No Doubt - Rock Steady
Lamb of God - Killadelphia
Beck - Guerolito
Two Gallants - What the Toll Tells
Clearlake - Cedars
V/A - Exit Music: Songs With Radio Heads

I still plan on going back to buy the new Phoenix, I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, The Knife, some DFA remix comps, and some miscellaneous other stuff. If you're willing to look, there is plenty to be found.
I spent nearly $75 @ Rockville today:

Masonna - Frequency L.S.D.
John Zorn - Moonchild
Tim Hecker - Mirages
The Red Krayola - Introduction
Oingo Boingo - Skeletons In The Closet: Best Of
Romeo Void - Benefactor/Never Say Never
OMD - Organisation
Ministry - Psalm 69
Boris - Pink
Noxagt- s/t
Can - s/t
Henry Cow - Western Culture
Cardinal -s/t (reissue w/ bonus tracks)
Four Tet - Everything Ecstatic (DVD/CD)
Magazine - Real Life/Secondhand Daylight (two-fer)

One thing I found funny was that I had read just a couple of days ago that the Cardinal disc had been reissued. Digging through the racks I came across Cardinal but was disappointed that it was the old one. Finding the reissue version a few cds later was a real surprise.
I agree there is plenty to choose from, it's just with a couple early expensive import buying sprees, i'm trying to hold off for a bigger discount before spend lots of time going through the racks. if i don't get whatever, my typical zen approach to such things.

also, watch out for those 5 discs for $4 dollars bins… there were a couple "misfiled" discs in there that didn't come up with the special pricing which was annoying.
Haha tell me about it. My wife will be so glad when Tower is finally closed. At least the stuff I've bought so far has been stuff she likes.

Tower Alexandria is closing on Sunday. Pretty well cleaned out, but here's some of what's left at 70% off:

Black Heart Procession
Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville
Mew
Long Winters
Jim Noir
Jamie Callum
The Streets
Lots of obscure Drag City stuff
Tindersticks
Slowdive (30 copies of Slouvlaki!)
Pony Up
Rachel Goswell
Huskey Rescue
Sadies double live album
Bob Mould's latest
Danielson
Slowdive (30 copies of Slouvlaki!)

Did you notice if it's the recent remastered version or the reissue of the original?

Not worth the gas for me to travel all that way for it but I'd scoop up at least one copy if it's the remastered. Damn. Either way, a must have for anyone who has the slightest interest in anything remotely Shoegaze. Pure beauty.

The Rachel Goswell is good too if you like the female British modern Folk sound. Personally, I love the album but realize it's not for all. Already have my copy though.
Thanks for the update. I see a couple of things there I'm interested in.

I'm going to be a dork and use my vacation day tomorrow and hit all of the suburban locations.

I forgot, they also have a copy of Chad VanGaalen's first album, which is exellent.
If anyone happens to see a white guy wearing jeans, Campers, and a solid earth-tone shirt, in a local Tower Records tomorrow, be sure to say "hi" to Rhett.
