$1B offered for Dulles Toll Road

Virginia transportation officials have received a proposal for a $1 billion purchase of the Dulles Toll Road by a group of contractors and road operators.
In exchange, the group would operate the road, collect the revenue it generates and make various upgrades. Tamara Neale, a spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Transportation, said Tuesday that the department received the proposal but declined further comment.
Among the proposal's backers are Clark Construction Group, Shirley Contracting and Autostrade, which operates the private Dulles Greenway in Northern Virginia that links to the Dulles Toll Road, according to The Washington Post.
"Our engineers have to review the proposal to make sure everything is in place before we comment and post it to the public," Neale says.
Virginia transportation officials have been working more closely with the public sector as of late. Still under review is a proposal by construction company Fluor Daniel to add four "high occupancy toll" lanes to the Beltway's 14-mile stretch between Springfield and the Maryland border. Fluor, which would pay for the bulk of the project, would finance the $700 million proposal through revenue from future toll collections.
