L'Shana Tova

for any Jews celebrating :)

my bro and i keep listening to Death Cab's "The New Year"
Mosel Tov!

I'm not Jewish but would still like to extend my wishes to those who are.
It's also the start of Ramadan, which for me means all the bars are closed tonight. :(

You seem to allude to your Jewish-ness a lot on this bboard & elsewhere. Does it mean that you are a religiously devout person…a true believer in Yeshua, or Shiva, or whatever..? Are you spending lots of time praying daily?

You know, you don't hear the rest of saying things like, "My parents are typical Methodists"?

…Just wondering?
I'm not Jewish but I respect your weird and strange Lord-impaling traditions. Except for those faggot hats, I will never respect that. Happy Maccabbes Day, or whatever!

Well a Happy Kwanzaa to you, sir!
By being "typical Methodists" I really mean to say that my people spend rather an inordinate ammount of their time busilly controlling the world pork-rind & mobile home industries.

i surely do not want to speak for her, but many jews are "overtly jewish" because it's the only way they can maintain their identity (whether they identify as jewish on a national, ethnic, or religious basis)

jews who don't overtly identify themselves as such often just assimilate into mainstream culture, which is largely christian

it's interesting to go to israel and see an entire nation of jews … many of them do not overtly identify themselves as religious / jewish because they simply don't have to … the DEFAULT is judaism (the whole country shuts down from friday evening - saturday evening, holidays, etc), and there is no fear of losing their identity via assimilation

there is (generally) not much of a need for a WASP to overtly assert his/her ethnic/religious background because it's generally the default in this county

but again, i don't mean to speak for her at all, just pointing things out
But you don't see the Hispanics, Native Americans, Asians,African-Americans, Buddhists, Agnostics, Muslims, etc. of the board aggressively asserting those facts…

Perhaps not "on this board" but I saw an article a few weeks ago detailing the great number of Hispanic's refusing to learn English for fear of their culture being eroded.

Agnostics and atheists often try to heighten the difference between themselves and their religious neighbors.

fair enough … i was just speaking from experience about identity issues of american jews, i obviously can't speak for these other groups (well, maybe agnostics)
Pushy athiests abound, but where are the assertive agnostics?
i'm pretty sure that i've referred to myself as a nonchristian a few times on this board
my parents are typical catholics

jews like talking about being jews. i've always found it kinda charming. surprised that some people have never encountered this before

So are you a pushy Pittsbleurghian athiest?
African-Americans do as well, just not on this board.

This African-American gentleman who was riding the bus with me and talking on his cell yesterday, kept saying nigger this and nigger that.

No, I'm not SUPER-JEWISH at all…in fact, I'm kind of slightly agnostic. But I'm still a Jew. And yes, Jews do love to talk about other Jews and them being Jews and etc. Plus, if you had my sense of humor, and my group of friends, you'd tell constant sarcastic Jewish jokes to top it off. That's just the way I am. I've got a couple of overtly Christian friends…it just seems to me in today's society, though, that anyone who isn't overt about their religion is Christian by default.
I get the feeling that being Jewish is more of a culture than a religion.

In a way yes, and in a way no. That's kind of the beauty in Judaism. I'm fairly agnostic at this point in my life, however, regardless of your beliefs in God or not; the Jewish community still welcomes you. You still participate in the holidays and are part of the community. I still choose to get confirmed. You can be Jewish and Buddhist, and they even coincide quite nicely. The people that tend to speak of the culture aspects of Judaism are always the ones that actually participate in them–which most Jews tend not to. So, when you hear about it, it's for a reason…
