Originally posted by Xavier Bush, Power Forward:Perhaps not "on this board" but I saw an article a few weeks ago detailing the great number of Hispanic's refusing to learn English for fear of their culture being eroded.
But you don't see the Hispanics, Native Americans, Asians,African-Americans, Buddhists, Agnostics, Muslims, etc. of the board aggressively asserting those facts…
Originally posted by Xavier Bush, Power Forward:fair enough … i was just speaking from experience about identity issues of american jews, i obviously can't speak for these other groups (well, maybe agnostics)

jews like talking about being jews. i've always found it kinda charming. surprised that some people have never encountered this before

Originally posted by The Walrus:No, I'm not SUPER-JEWISH at all…in fact, I'm kind of slightly agnostic. But I'm still a Jew. And yes, Jews do love to talk about other Jews and them being Jews and etc. Plus, if you had my sense of humor, and my group of friends, you'd tell constant sarcastic Jewish jokes to top it off. That's just the way I am. I've got a couple of overtly Christian friends…it just seems to me in today's society, though, that anyone who isn't overt about their religion is Christian by default.

You know, you don't hear the rest of saying things like, "My parents are typical Methodists"?
…Just wondering?
Originally posted by econo:In a way yes, and in a way no. That's kind of the beauty in Judaism. I'm fairly agnostic at this point in my life, however, regardless of your beliefs in God or not; the Jewish community still welcomes you. You still participate in the holidays and are part of the community. I still choose to get confirmed. You can be Jewish and Buddhist, and they even coincide quite nicely. The people that tend to speak of the culture aspects of Judaism are always the ones that actually participate in them–which most Jews tend not to. So, when you hear about it, it's for a reason…
I get the feeling that being Jewish is more of a culture than a religion.
