meet up recommendations near 9:30 club?

there didn't seem to be a concensus to phillyhokie's request for restaurant recommendations, except of course for BEN'S CHILI BOWL!!, but there will be a bunch of people who don't know each other looking for a place to get together before David Gray on 8/6. Surely, there must be a bar or two in the area; after all, it's next to a university, right?
Any suggestions, close to the club?
phillyhokie, care to join us?

Of course…there's always Polly's if you take out a second mortgage to buy a round of drinks.

I'd suggest DC9 for drinks only (and it's a half block away), of the Saloon for drinks and some food. It's three, three and a half blocks over on U Street. Polly's fills up fast because it's small, so if you have people arriving at different times, I'd go with one of my suggestions.

Two more options: A friend and I ate at the new Ethiopian restaurant right across from 930 on the southwest corner of 9th and U..inside or roof-top dining; very funky space; nice staff; cold drinks and REALLY cheap good food. I'd suggest it. Today's Food section in the Post plugged a new restaurant a few doors down from St.Ex. (on the southeast corner of 14 & T) called Pilar's…got nice reviews. Same Chef/management as Cafe St. Ex. Enjoy!

it's Bar Pilar, and it's nothing to really write home about … it's way too hot right now b/c of the st-ex conx, and it's not the kind of place that's fun to go to when it's crowded … food is so-so
sucks how much the menu prices went up at st-ex, it just got too crazy there … would make for an interesting study in how a restaurant/bar starts as a neighborhood place and turns into a yuppie destination spot, attracting folks from nova and beyond, inspiring a price change
