The Offspring at CBGBs

The Offspring are playing at CBGBs in NYC on August 16th. Has anyone been to the legendary club? How big is it? Anyone thinking about going?
Haven't been to CBGB's for years and years and it was before it was renovated. Don't let that mislead you though as it's still a dump.

From my recollection, it's kind of small but will hold a nice crowd. Maybe 500-700 people. Or maybe less…I honestly can't remember.

The bathrooms are downstairs and best to empty your bladder as best you can before you get there, especially if you are a woman but even if you are a guy. It was worse than the worst gas station or late night club restroom that I've ever experienced in my life and it smelled like there was hundreds of years of pissing going on in there without any clean up. The toilets seemed to work and were okay by themselves except the seats were soaking wet. Best to hover over the seat and drip dry if need be.

Eventually, we ended up in some back rooms and dressing rooms, one of which was called something like the Beethoven Room because it had a bust of the composer in it. I really can't remember were they were or how we got there.

All in all, it's a dump with a great history that's still going strong and you can let loose and have lots of fun.

CBGB's is tiny, maybe 200 people at most. I've been there a couple times and while I was overwhelmed with the history, most often I was wishing for my $10 cover charge back. I was fortunate to catch an early Yeah Yeah Yeahs show there a few years back which is one of the few good bands I've ever been lucky enough to catch there. Otherwise, I've seen mostly crap there.

If your purpose is to see the club, the Offspring show could be the worst possible time to do it.

If your purpose is to see the Offspring, good luck getting tickets, and if you get them, buy drinks in bulk and don't break the seal, because you may never make it to the restroom unless you're willing to miss the entire show.

Yeah, I'd trust Smackie's assesment of the size as it is small and I was last there long before Smackie ever set foot in the place.

And regardless of the reason, whatever you do, DON'T BREAK THE SEAL, of the drinks or your bladder!!!
And believe me, I wish I were going there when Jag was going there…back when all was right in the punk world.
my brother was there, and he called me up in the middle of a show…
he told me the bathrooms didn't have doors or stall doors?
While the bathroom may not be pleasant, I highly suggest you check it out. It has to be seen to be believed. Just hold your nose and don't touch anything.
Fire code is 240 maximum people - I saw Rancid there in 2003 and they crammed about 400 in to the place. They're right in the previous posts - don't break the seal because you'll never make it through the crowd to get to the bathroom. If you get the chance to go you should definitely check the place out. There is a real good chance it will be closing in the fall due to differences with their landlord.
Do people really pay money to see The Offspring?
That was my first thought as well.

You mean you're finishing up your PhD in Molecular Biology at USC also?

It wasn't at USC that they met. It was at a community college in oc. I swear I heard Kurt Loder say it once on MTV.

There's only one real "University" in California, and it's called Stanford, not USC.

OJ is a typical USC alumnus. Beware of any so-called universities that flaunt good sports programs. It's a dead giveaway ggw. I thought that you already knew it?
according to ggw's article, they met in high school
