Maybe it goes back to the joke about the town with two barbers and why you should go to the one with the worse haircut.
My sister just got the second worst haircut of her life in one of those places. The guy made one wrong snip and didn't know where to go from there.
I, on the other hand, have started cutting my own hair. It's tough to screw things up with clippers, especially when you don't have much hair left anyway.

I used to cut my own hair…nothing like a drunk haircut!
I used to let my (former) SO cut my hair. He totally screwed it up once and I ended up nearly shaving my head to fix it. I no longer fear bad haircuts, since I know how I look pretty much bald.

the best haircut i have gotten to date was in a sketch latino salon in the middle of downtown LA for $15.
these hairdressers at the "trendy" salons aren't necessarily the best, at all. they are horribly caught up in the look at the moment; and obviously don't think "hmm, will this look good on the person? will it fit their face shape? will it label them a target of sheer idiocy on the sidewalk?" you just have to know these things.
