Got the Bloc Party album the other day and my first reaction after listening to it one time is that it is pretty boring. Now, I need to listen to it a couple more times before sending it to the trash. I remember the first time I listened to a Pogues song, A Pair of Brown Eyes, I couldn't understand how people could like it (now I am flying 2500 miles to see them in DC).
Most Disappointing Albums of 2005
worlds apart was certainly not up to standard for the trail of dead, but it had its moments, like on will you smile again, rest will follow, the best…

don't lie, you never listened to Death Cab before this album, and before they were mentioned on the OC.

None of these were disappointments, since I wasn't expecting to like them…
1. I still hate the White Stripes. Still think they suck.
2. My Morning Jacket really sucks.
3. I don't get the critical raves for New Pornographers or Sufjan Stevens. Listenable, but certainly not special.
4. The singer from the Decemberists kills whatever chances they have of being good with his annoying, faggy (not that there's anything wrong with being gay) voice.

The new Stellastarr album was a big disappointment. I agree with the critique above.
It was also a disappointment how poorly Ladytron's new album sold. Eighty percent of that record is excellent.
But my biggest disappointment was that the new Sleater-Kinney album didn't completely blow donkey balls.

Trail Of Dead, Daft Punk, and Stellastarr* are my top three, in that order.
Sufjan Stevens, New Pornographers, and Decemberists (and alot more) were OVERRATED as Rhett or somebody said, but I guess I wasn't expecting fantastic records going in. Well, I did think Michigan by Sufjan was pretty great, but still I wasn't expecting to be floored by Illinois, and I wasn't.
I disagree with whoever said Beck. That was his most solid release since ODelay.

Personally I've been disappointed by the whole year. But, I have gotten far fewer releases than I have in years past, so may have missed some gems.
I have two Andrew Bird albums that I love. The new one, which has certainly caught on with the critics, has not really caught on with me. So I guess that's a bit of a disappointment.
I wonder if this could cure me of my hate new music funk:

Was Fatboy Slim's Palookaville this year? I listened to it at a friend's house and could only think "he's fallen a long way baby".
My winner is still - the undisputed champion of disappointment:
<img src="http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B000BFHVJM.02.LZZZZZZZ" alt=" - " />
And this is the challenger:

I should have trusted my gut & been warned off by the cheezy cover.

I can't speak to either dissapointment - I have Z and like it but have no other MMJ albums to compare it to
but damn, if that Rob Dickinson cover isn't hilarious - like something Ricky Martin or someone like that would do…!!

at dawn > the tennessee fire > it still moves > avian bird flu > z
i don't know if any of you have picked up the MMJ "early recordings" CDs, but james' cover of "west end girls" is worth hearing
I think the biggest disappointment for me was the SFA album "Love Kraft." Which is a shame, because I love just about everything else they've ever released.
Hmmm…Biggest Disappointment this year:
Thievery Corporation - The Cosmic Game. All the guest stars in the world couldn't save this from being a mediocre effort on their part.

Originally posted by Sir HC:the production on this record is being to annoy me, the frantic playing just sounds contrived, live they loosely up a bit which is why the band will be worth further listens. i actually like the remix album in part because the vocals are a bit more subdued on it.

the more i think about it, other than "16 Military Wives" and "The Sporting Life" the new Decemberists just wasn't that compelling. My current tops of 2005 would definitely be revised by the end of next year.
