Al Gore Announces Massive Environmental Concerts

Former Vice President Al Gore announced today that he has helped organize a group of giant concerts, dubbed Live Earth, to raise awareness about global warming. The concerts are set up similar to Live 8, as they will all take place on July 7 â?? 7/7/07 â?? in seven cities: London, Shanghai, Sydney, Johannesburg, and cities to be determined in Brazil, Japan and the United States. Snoop Dogg, Pharrell, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Black Eyed Peas, Bon Jovi, Fall Out Boy, Akon, Lenny Kravitz, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, John Mayer, Foo Fighters, KoRn, AFI and Sheryl Crow are among the artists who have already signed on. More will be announced at a later date and over 100 artists in total are expected to perform.

The events, which will combine film, music and televised material, are expected to reach an audience of more than 2 billion people. Microsoft's MSN will broadcast the concert on the Internet, and NBC-Universal, Sirius and XM Satellite Radio also will take part, according to the Financial Times. In the U.K., the BBC will broadcast the event.

The announcement was made today by Cameron Diaz, Gore, Pharrell and concert organizer Kevin Wall (who also organized Live 8) at a press conference at the California Science Center. Concert proceeds will go to fund The Alliance for Climate Protection, a movement chaired by Gore. The organizers also plan to use only electricity from renewable sources, employ recycling and biodegradable materials where possible, and offset travel via carbon credits.

British band Muse also recently spoke to London's XFM about the event, saying that they were invited to play. Drummer Dom Howard explained, â??Weâ??ve been asked, there's gonna be something happening, some big global gig. It's happening in seven continents, around the world, all on the seventh [of July] in 24 hours, and thereâ??s going to be loads of bands playing. That's all I know.â? When asked if Muse would like to take part, singer Matt Bellamy added, â??Weâ??re thinking about it, thereâ??s an issue, weâ??ll see how it goes. Weâ??ve got a gig on that same day, in Ireland you see, so we need to work out if we can make it or not.â?
Why do these events always tend to get terrible artists?
where's the artists that are supposed to make us want to go to this?
has anyone else seen that "Black Eyed Peas for Hire" ad on SNL? really funny stuff, i can't find it on youtube
and cities to be determined in Brazil, Japan and the United States.
does this mean DC is off the confirmed list of cities? hope not, i wouldn't mind having the option of (easily) attending.

where's the artists that are supposed to make us want to go to this?
while i'm hoping that your answer lies in the phrase "More will be announced at a later date and over 100 artists in total are expected to perform", i wouldn't be opposed to catching Snoop, Lenny Kravitz, John Legend, and Foo Fighters. but for the indie-only crowd, i can see how the announced names are less than stellar. however, the goal of today's press conference was to gain public attention - saying that Son Volt and The Dears are on the bill isn't going to get this event in the minds of 2 billion people. i'm hoping higher quality (and thus lesser known) acts will be announced eventually.
For D.C. I think there is an issue about getting the mall. . . the National Park Service already has two applications for that date, including the Smithsonian folk-life festival, and say they won't give priority to this.
That lineup seems fitting for Al Gore. A good idea, well-intentioned, but the execution leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I'd respect the park service for rejecting a permit concluding its appropriate to use federal land for such a shite concert.
Who wants stinky hippies to piss on our pure, local federal lands?
Add a Portishead or MBV reunion and I'm sold, man.
why are people upset with the lineup?

i mean, if you're going to have a concert about something as worldly as global warming, would it make sense to have a bunch of indie/cult bands that most of the world has never heard of?

i hate the lineup too, but if you want 200 million people to want to attend or watch your concert and get the message across the world, you aint getting Death Cab For Cutie to headline…

naw mean?
Exactly. It's all about getting people to show up and hear your message. You're not going to get 100,000 people on The Mall to see Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
Son Volt and the Dears are playing? Sweet!
rhett: i have no idea if they're playing, i certainly can't confirm them.

i just picked two over-rated indie bands that for reasons unknown seem to have cred on this board

<ducks>

:p
Clap Your Hands & Say Yeah To The Ridiculous Theory Of Gorbal Warming
Gore will submit an application to have the show on the mall (if he hasn't already). If/when it gets rejected by the Bush administration, he gets to use it as a political poker chip against the Repubs.
maybe they can have it at Merriweather!!! :)
Which is crap really. The Folklife Festival has been on the mall on the same dates for decades.
I say good for Gore and I hope they have it on the Mall.
