I think that the further south you go in VA, the worse things get for speeders. One of my friends was caught heading home from UVA for break and had to spend 72 hours in jail. Just ridiculous.

VA just needs some leg irons, a road boss, and a hard boiled egg eating contest and they would be just like the south..

jailed for speeding..what a good use of police time..
Somewhere in Bumf**k VA I got a 72 in a 65 zone! On Christmas day no less. I was livid, but paid the fine, and will never go near that area again. They had it set up with the little POS town having a sliver across 95 (or actually some other interstate…) so they could put their local git on the road running a trap. Can't beat these guys.
Ironically, decades ago I noticed that, generally, the fastest drivers on the roads in Maryland are Virginians. That's when I started calling them all a bunch of displaced Germans. I've yet to figure out how they've managed to make it through the state ticketless yet I'll see a Marylander pulled over for doing something like 60 in a 55 zone after the Virginian has speed by at about 70+.

Virginians drive fast to get around the typical Marylanders who are doing 48 in the left lane. What's up with that? Is it some sort of reverse custom in Maryland that slow traffic must stay to the left?
so scientist you like it when a man in uniform tells you that you are really naughty
Probably because they've got further to go, duh.

Not true! I'm a Maryland driver, and this topic was started because I was driving too fast. ;)

I've noticed that cars with DC tags are the most arrogant, dangerous and dumbest drivers in this area. Cutting you off, making right turns from the far left lane, tailgating, pulling into traffic then proceeding at 20mph..etc.

Oh, Christ! I know those types too well. Some of them drive like that because of all of the damn tickets that we get for watching the road instead of the speedometer because of Big Brother On Wheels.

And then there are the idiots who always drive just fast enough to get in front of you on a single lane road. You know the type. The ones driving 30 on a 45 road. Take their good old time getting to the green light and then step on it just enough to slide through the yellow light while you're stuck at the red light.

Sometimes it gets worse. The 1st slow poke works his way down the road but slow poke #2 makes a right or left turn at the intersection and then you are stuck behind another dragging-his-asster!

I just want to know how Virginians get through Maryland without a ticket. I don't want to stop them, I just want to know how to do it.

I think it's because VA is further south so they have that "notten mar state boy" attitude.

Also, VA consider speeding fines as revenue rather than punishment, so are more eager to write tickets. I've been told that there's speed traps further south that are designed solely for the purpose of catching non-locals…for example, a long straight stretch of road will have a 55mph limit then suddenly switch to a 35mph for no apparent reason, then have a cop there full time.

Delaware is like that! You wonder how they can get by with no sales tax. It's all the tickets and/or nights in jail they collect. But Maryland is Tax Hell. We pay them too. In fact, there are organizations who are in the process of trying prove that the red light cameras in Maryland are purposely set with too short yellow lights in order to collect revenue. I've even heard of cases where people have come to complete stops, made legal rights on red, got a ticket in the mail, went to court and were still forced to pay them with the logic that you don't get points. Fucking extortionists!

I got nailed by a camera in Bethesda, and this is exactly how it happened;
It was on the way home from work about 8:45 at night, it was raining so the roads were wet. I came to a stop at the light and heard the screeching of wheels on the road. I looked in my rear view mirror to see a minivan heading right for me. I drove forward to avoid getting rear-ended and "FLASH" I got my photo taken. Maybe I should've stayed were I was and got in a wreck but avoided a fine…I could've sued and everything had they rear ended me.

I thought we had the right to address our accusers in the USA…how the hell do you address a friggin camera?

I've heard plenty of stories like that about Big Brother's Eyeballs! In fact, when the first cameras were installed in Maryland, someone slammed on their brakes because they were afraid of getting a ticket. Should have gone for the ticket because they ended up dying!
the only reason that they have cameras is because the stupid police (i apologize if anyone here is or loves a police officer personally) are too damn lazy to wait around all day giving people tickets.

In Baltimore Shitty, it's because they are too busy chasing down real criminals. I won't knock the cops there because they are very overworked and treated like shit in the 'city that bleeds'. It's the judicial and political systems that are so fucked up.

We did have lots and lots of people abusing the light system and going through lights that had been red for a good long time. They are the ones that I blame! But Baltimore and Maryland are very greedy and see all the money coming in and have turned it into one big KGB spying network to suck as much money out of everyone that they can. Supposedly, in Baltimore Shitty especially, the yellow light time has been cut back intentionally to snag more people so they can extort more money. And from what I've heard, going to court to fight it, no matter how innocent you really are, doesn't work. They just add on court costs. Fuckers!

well i agree about the red light cameras.. sorry i didn't really read all of the thread (how typical) but i was talking about the speed trap cameras… but with the red lights, i have a very personal and painful attachment to an incident involving some asshole who ran a red light at a very busy intersection and pretty much escaped without so much as a slap on the hand… i think the cameras may seem like a nuisance but in the end, if you're dumb enough to run a red light blatantly (i'm not talking about it's still yellow when you get there, etc etc)you should get a ticket. where are you going that is so damn important it can't wait 30 more seconds?
If the punished drunk drivers enough maybe they wouldn't need to use big brother to fix the traffic light sequence to catch us out.

A good few years ago I was delivering pizza's part time….on 23rd December I was stopped waiting to make a left turn when I was rear ended by some prick who was drunk out of his skull. When it got to court he gave the old "I'm a Vietnam vet" horse shit and ended up with a $200 fine and had to attend some driving classes or something like that…I was so pissed off at the sentence I jumped up and yelled, "I'm a Falklands veteran, don't I get any justice because we actually won our war or what?" …not the smartest thing to say I know, but I was so mad I lost control. I ended up with 9 months of physical therapy and was unable to work for 6 months….bottom line, it cost the drunken arsehole $200 and me thousands of dollars in lost wages, all my savings, my excellent credit rating and medical problems for the rest of my life as a result. That was Maryland by the way.
