Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ Black Cat Post-Show Roll Call

Can't believe there wasn't a thread for this already. Who was there and what did you think?
I thought it started kind of slow, somewhat lethargic, but both CYHSY and the audience were popping by the end of the set, and the encore was fantastic.
I got there right after the Black Angels left the stage. Were they any good?

The dude had BJM stickers on his guitar. Both bands were good, definitely worth the $12, but nothing too amazing. CYHSY dragged and seemed a bit unsure of themselves at times, but overall put on a good show.

I was there, and was unimpressed with the Black Angels; slightly more impressed with CYHSY, but not by much. It was a bit lethargic.

i just got the Clap Your Hands…cd last week, and i'm loving it a lot! they kind of remind me of what would happen if Pavement and The Arcade Fire had an illegitimate lovechild.

I was not there, but I did read a review that said the National was a lot better live then the Claps.

Saw both bands. Not terribly impressed with the Black Angels. Listenable, but every song sounded the same. Singer didn't have much range and no one in the band really stood out.
Somewhat disappointed with CYH, mainly because I've really been digging the album. I had a feeling they might have a hard time pulling it off live, and I think I was right. May have been affected by the PA and/or the mix, but the group didn't seem to click for most of the set. Sounds like the group is still learning how to play their newer songs live, which is ok. I agree that it got better as the set went on and they closed very strong.

i was there in the front for both bands. i really liked the black angels, maybe it was easier to be into them standing right infront of them. and i thought cyhsy needed some…interpersonal skills, but were really good otherwise. i'm thinking about breaking my no treks to baltimore during the work week rule to go see them tonight.

I really enjoyed the show but was disappointed with the people near me…some of the most annoying people I have ever seen at a show. They thought they were terribly original and funny by clapping their hands and yelling "yeah" between every song.
I thought the band sounded great by the end of the show. They are a pretty new band and have some kinks to work out. However, I think this is only the 15th or 20th time that they have headlined a show. I think it is great to see a band at this stage in their career…flirting with stardom and unsure how to deal with it.
I especially enjoyed watching the contrast between the multi-instrumentalist on the left of the stage and the lead, Ounsworth. The dude on the left was obviously thrilled to be playing and seemed to be feeding off the crowd. Ounsworth, on the other hand, tries his hardest to come across as aloof.

You're not supposed to applaud between songs? That seems to be taking the hipster attitude a little too far. Oh, you're complaining about people shouting "Yeah"? Well, OK, I guess that could get annoying after a few songs.
Just for the record (c.f. the recent Nada Surf thread) , I thought the Black Cat sounded pretty good last night.

I agree. Some of the people around here really need to lighten up and go with the flow. Clapping their hands and saying "Yeah"? Sounds funny to me. There are many people out there that I could get annoyed or pissed by; but instead, I spend my time laughing. It tends to make for a much better time.

in agreement here, would be kinda funny the first time, but annoying after that…
so not only do people not dance in dc, they don't applaude either between songs?

I was both dancing and clapping at the show.
It was in the incessant and simultaneous clapping and screaming "yeah" (a very clever play on the band's name) that I found annoying. The girls were hysterical with laughter every time they did this.
I am a pretty reasonable person. This was annoying.
