Eldridge Cleaver was a civil rights activist and member of the militant Black Panther Party, a counter-culture group calling for armed resistance to societal oppression of African Americans. To promote the Party's "Black Power" agenda, Cleaver entered the fashion industry and designed a line of men's pants, featuring a codpiece that emphasized the genitals – "a Cleaver sleeve," as he called it, which was a penis sheath that was basically a sock protruding from the front of a pair of pants.
