what makes you think people here are using ITMS?

Yeah, I use iTunes to play mp3's but don't buy anything from them. If I were to go with something I'd probably go with the yahoo music store…if I'm paying i'm more interested in a subscription based thing (especially for $6.99 a month).

well it's the leading digital music service and most people are sheep and not willing to findout what the alternatives are. the same sheep who will despite eMusics new additions will continue to pay more at iTMS for the same material. besides i'm still trying to convert everyone to the best digital service. it maybe not be the most interesting model like the napster or yahoo, but still the best…

Sun Records on eMusic

Plugging eMusic – a digital music store with low rates (the basic subscription works out to 25 cents per track), high bitrate MP3s (196 kbps instead of the standard 128) that will play on any MP3 player, a great selection of music from independent labels, and a staff of excellent columnists, including Ann Powers, Hua Hsu, Justin Davidson and Douglas Wolk – is something I've been intending to do for a while, urged on by a number of reader requests. Today is a particularly good day to do it because eMusic has just announced that it will be offering the legendary Sun Records catalog for download, with the first 400 tracks posted this morning. This batch includes classic tracks by Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and many more (although not Sun's Elvis Presley recordings, which are controlled by his estate), and it's the first time any of them have been made available digitally. Over the next few months an additional 900 tracks will be added, many that have previously been available only on (extremely rare) vinyl, or as part of large (extremely expensive) box sets. And it really is an extraordinary catalog of music, just as aesthetically satisfying, with that crisp, minimalist sound, as it is historically important in chronicling the early days of rock 'n' roll and a seminal period in rockabilly.

Perhaps less historically important, but still exciting, are some of the other recent additions to eMusic's offerings: Merge Records (home of Spoon, the Arcade Fire, M. Ward, the Magnetic Fields' "69 Love Songs" and much more), Vice Records (Bloc Party, the Streets), and the vast Rykodisc catalog (which includes nearly all of Frank Zappa's work). Even if you don't plan on becoming a long-term subscriber, you can't go wrong by taking advantage of the eMusic sign-up offer of 50 free MP3s. Enjoy.

so emusic isn't for everybody… i just happen to think that they have an impressive catalog which is getting better by the day that is all… no more emusic updates from me. unless they add subpop :D

i like to hear the Emusic updates. i loved it when it was like $10 for all you could download.

and as soon as i get a raise or sell a kidney or something, I am gonna rejoin. cause i like it.

perhaps I'll cancel Netflix and join EMusic again. ahhhh, great idea!

eMusic was also plugged by the guy sitting next to me at a wedding I was at this weekend. It's definately better than iTunes…it's only worth buying an mp3 if there's no DRM (unless the DRM allows you access any song in a million song catalog at any time).

Just a little trick I shared with a buddy over the weekend.

If you sign up for the free 50 downloads, then cancel your account before the $9.99 a month for 20 downloads kicks in, eMusic will offer you $5.99 a month for 20 downloads for the first three months.

If you can't find and/or be happy with 110 downloads on eMusic for under $20 I'd be very surprised. And if you can convince friends, there's 10 more in it for you.
