Another shameless plug, but in this case, I think the event in question is special enough to justify it…
"We Fought the Big One," the monthly dj night at Marx Cafe celebrating the original post-punk/indie and shoegaze scenes, is turning 4-years old this Friday, Feb. 1. To mark this occasion, my friend/dj partner Brandon Grover and I will be joined by a special guest dj: Dan Selzer, who runs Acute Records. Most recently, Acute put out a fantastic career retrospective of The Fire Engines, a legendary Scottish noise-pop group that was a key influence on everyone from The Jesus & Mary Chain to Primal Scream (btw, you may have seen that Pitchfork gave this release a glowing review fairly recently). Dan is making a special trip from New York for this. He's a very cool guy and I highly recommend introducing yourself to him if you have an interest in the original post-punk scene or want to know what it's like to run a label.
Marx Cafe will also be offering a special deal on its 2 most popular Belgian beers: $3 off Chimay and De Konick all night long!
We will also have plenty of free music to giveaway. There will be Acute stuff aplenty and also a new mix cd that Brandon and I have curated, plus some Screen Vinyl Image singles.
Hope you will join us!
Cheers,
Rick
