iPod Question

I just bought my wife an iPod for her birthday (the Nano, which makes me extremely jealous…thanks for the tip, Markie!). At any rate, she's in the process of filling it up, but rather than ripping all of the CD's that I've already ripped, we were thinking the best bet would be to tranfer them from my iPod to hers.

Now, my question is this. My iPod is formatted to my PC at work and her's to her Mac at home. If I were to plug my iPod into her Mac, would I be forced to reformat it? I've never tried using it on different operating systems, so I'm not sure of the problems I might face. I've just finished finally placing all of my music on there (a 10 month project) and would not be happy having to start from scratch.

Also, I know you cannot copy songs from an iPod to your computer through iTunes, but can you transfer them from iPod to iPod? I know about going in to the iPod through the computer, but was wondering about an easier way.

And finally, I realize the easy way to get the music over would be to keep a shared library, but her computer stinks and mine is a work machine, so at the moment, we're not keeping a library anywhere.

If I were you I would get an external Hard Drive so you can keep a library. It makes so much more sense. If your ipod breaks or crashes then you have to load everything all over again.

I know, I know…it's on the horizon. We're in the process of looking for a new home computer, and that will mark the beginnings of my music library. But for now, I've got nothing.

I am pretty sure you cannot do ipod to ipod transfers at all. You can probably find software that can get music from an ipod onto a computer, but if you dont have HD space then that is not going to help you.

Your best bet is to pillage someone elses library to load up the ipod….

How much friggin' music do you have now? I'm at 46 GB, which I'm sure around here is pretty pissant.

i have something on my mac at home that will take files off a ipod and not delete them. just do a google search if no one posts a link. i'll check when i go home

You can probably find software that can get music from an ipod onto a computer

you don't need software - just read it as a external drive - although this only really works if you want the entire contents of someones ipod as the names/tags etc are all hidden so al you have is a bunch of sequentially numbered folders

i use ephPod to move from ipod to computer. it works pretty smoothly, and if you make a custom playlist you can transfer that whole playlist at once, which i find very convenient.

I'd be careful with that NkotBaba. You may end up with an RH file factor, or a Blue iPod Mini.
