all these bullshit claims rappers make about violence partly fuels the real posturing and hip-hop aping that happens on the streets, so when some idiot like cam'ron actually runs into some of the violence that he helped fuel, i don't feel bad in the slightest
Than why do you listen to so much of it?

not to be a dick, jaguar, but comments like this just prove how little people know about hip-hop

here are some of the hip-hop acts i listen to (just scrolling through my itunes):

a tribe called quest
aesop rock
atmosphere
beastie boys
black star
blackalicious
cee-lo
common
danger mouse
de la soul
del tha funkee homosapien

if you knew anything about hip-hop, you'd know that the stupid-ass violent posturing is largely done by the commercial shit pouring out of the radio … MANY people listen to hip-hop and avoid that crap

and it's not that all this hip-hop is uniformally positive, but it addresses real issues and the rappers don't wear pink fucking velour

here's some lyrics from the roots' "what they do", released in 1996:

Never do….what they do, what they do, what they do…
Never do….what they do, what they do, what they do…

Verse One:

Yo, lost generation, fast pace nation
World population confront their frustration
The principles of true hip-hop have been forsaken
It's all contractual, and about money making
Pretend-to-be cats don't seem to know their limitations
Exact replication and false representation
You wanna be a man, then stand your own
To MC requires skills, I demand some shown
I let the frauds keep frontin
And roam like a celluar phone far from home
Giving crowds what they wanted
Offical hip-hop consumption, the 5th dumpin
Keepin ya party jumpin wit an original somethin
Yo, I dedicate this to the one dimension-al
No imagination, excuse for perpetration
My man came over and said
'Yo we thought we heard you'
Joke's for you
We heard your bitin ass crew but uh

Chorus: Raphael Saadiq

Never do, what they do when they do what they do
(repeat 2X)

Verse Two: Black Thought

Thin is the line of between love and hatred
The game is ill-natured, it's nothing sacred
Hey yo, it's funny when i see some rap niggaz do the making
Of you would blow up or go as far as they can take it
My nine to five is just to hit ya get the party live
I'm Black Thought, used to rap for sport

Now the rhymes need life support
I take it very seriously within this industry
It's various crews that try to touch me
But I come wit the beautiful thing
And I bless the track plushly
Around the world the crowds love me from doing tours
Recepient of applause from you and yours
Creator of original sounds to send to stores you take home
To absorb and sweat it out your pores
Now who can stop the music runnin through these veins
Infinitely go against the grain
That's why my motto's to

Chorus

Verse Three:

Livin the life of limos and lights
Airplanes and trains
Short days and long nights
Keyboards and mics
Bass chords and drum kicks
And my mental thick to hit my head like brick
As I embark on a mission welcoming to the dark
When I first spark the arts, when's the listening start
Open your head wide and let the thought inside
My style fortified by all of philladel-phy
I've dealt more stealth than all the wicked weal-thy
Mentality undetectable by the naked eye
Then I get paid when the record is played
To put it short I want it Made like Ed, nuff said
Then after that, I'm puttin on the ___
Let the ladies blend with the darkskin devil bred and discover
My level is that of no other
And Roots crew bring offical and true
While I'm continuin to…

Chorus: repeat 4X

the VAST majority of the hip-hop i listen to talks about kicking peoples ass in rap battles, not on the street
Then I would say these nice hippity hoppities need a new p.r. person because all the masses get is the hate-mongering, racist, sexist wankers like old fiddy.

Having said that…I asked this before and got ignored. "The disposable heroes of hipocrasy" I thought were great when I saw them support Billy Bragg. Are they part of the tree-hugging hip-hoppers?
KRS-One is pretty decent from what ive heard. He and Chuck D w/ Public Enemy ought to make the black community proud. Did/does anyone there listen to their message? I see a lot of black folks being their own worst enemy, but i really dont know, wish i did.

i can't say i'm flabbergasted by people on here having no idea about hip-hop history or the scene today, but most of these "underground" rappers DON'T WANT PR PEOPLE … did you read those lyrics? "never do… what they do…"

it's like saying pavement needed new PR folks because all the masses heard was shitty-ass stone temple pilots … it's just the way it is, the best and most challenging music is always underground

"Hiphoprisy"

And yes, they are part of the "tree-hugging" school. This was Michael Franti's group before he went solo.

I'm sure Hoya has heard "Television - The Drug of the Nation" but just doesn't make the connection.

they broke up a long time ago, didn't they? franti left and formed spearhead, and that turned into a solo project, if i remember correctly.

sure, sure … i don't want to write a thesis here, my only point being that many people on here are completely ignorant of hip-hop, but still often make these broad-brush statements about rappers

Charlie Hunter was part of that group too.

theres a huge line divided between RAPPERS and HIP HOP artists.

RAP IS SOMETHING YOU DO, HIP HOP IS SOMETHING YOU LIVE.
i liked when they said their name and what they do — to music:

my name is fred
and im an indus-trial engin-eer
and i'm here to tell - y'all
i'm the best there is

[bah-boom-boom-bap, bah-boom-boom-bap, wicky-wicky-wick, wicky-wicky-wick, bah-boom-boom-bap]

Being thinking human beings we tend to form opinions from the information we are presented with…and all I hear, or see on MTV for that matter are close up shots of womens genitalia while some idiot grabs his nuts while ranting on about his homies and his biatches and kill that muthafucka whitey pig….sorry, you must blame the messenger on this one.

I'm not the hip hop police or anything but that seems willfully ignorant of you to say. One needn't be too wise to know that MTV pimps music of the lowest common denominator – whether its bootie shakin club/kegger anthemz or of the mallpunk twinky breath variety – the common thread being a focus on image & lifestyle. Those being the two things that kids latch onto the quickest in their adolescence to form their identity. Being a bad ass roughneck has always been a strong image in us pop culture. Just look at how the media mythologized 50 cent as if he was some superhuman force that could walk through walls or something. The labels like to run this image into the ground because it works; it sells. If all I had was MTV to evaluate Punk by, I'd probably consider it to be pretty damn shallow too. Try applying some clinical thinking sometime instead of reachinng impulsive generalizations based on your own cultural biases.

edit: I should also add that if you're curious about hearing some Rap that doesn't suck, listen to this uplifting and inspiring artist named Project Pat. He has all the answers.

honestly, that makes you sound really ignorant … and the thing that really disturbs me is that there are TONS of people exactly like you, who really just have no idea what hip-hop is, but can easily dismiss it with stereotypes like this

just re-reading this again … do you have some kind of racial issues that you want to get off your chest here?
This is actually pretty funny.

Not in the slightest…..I just don't give a toss about political correctness, I simply call things as I seem them…It's a Manc thing isn't it Jag?

Change the colour of their skin, tweak the words slightly and see what happens. Just ask the Greaseman.

*disclaimer* I in no way condone the Greaseman's comments. In fact, I found them utterly disgusting and offensive, but no more disgusting and offensive than the lyrics of most of the hip hop/rap music aired over MTV.
Liberals are amazing in that they can academize just about anything.

Sure, it's a turd, but you have to respect where it's coming from. If you don't, you're an ignorant hatemongerer.

Hiphop is almost singlehandedly responsible for the downward slide in Black music from the 1980's onward. Put all of the rappers together, and they wouldn't have 1/10 the talent or taste of a Billie Holliday, Louis Armstrong, Robert Johnson, Ella Fitzgerald, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Arthur Alexander, Bessie Smith, or Memphis Minnie.
