Manga.

I like Speed Racer, though. But I have liked that since the 60's. I didn't hear the word 'manga' until the 80's…so therefore Speed Racer ISN'T manga.

Who likes badly animated Japanese cartoons enough to elevate them to high art, anyway?

No, it's anime. Manga is the term used for the Japanese equivalent of comic books. Many anime series, however, are based on manga… including Speed Racer!
