Although my buzz from this show is certainly shaved by news of E. Smith's passing.
agreed
That really was a great show. I had to keep pinching myself. I still find it hard to believe his voice is so good and that those songs could possibly sound better than they do on the recording.
Thanks for the push into going Kosmo and man who begins with M.
As it stands that is not vying for best show of the year, but best I have ever seen.
All you crazy people shoulda gone.

Great show! Singer with an amazing soulful voice, talented backing band with added tastful string and horn accompaniment. The nearly full Birchmere audience digging every minute of the show. Very few artists can so easily slip between garage rock raves up to songs that would make a belle and sebstaine fan tear up.
Love's classic "Forever Changes" should be required listening for all Echo and Bunnymen and Belle & Sebstaine fan. Hell "Forever Changes" is just required listening to anyone that considers themselves a serious rock fan. You can really hear Love influence in the guitar and bass lines of those great post-punk bands. Several members of Fugazi were spotted at the show.
I'd like to see Love again if only so that can rip through more of the pre "Forever Changes" songs. This band influcenced such 60's contemporaies as The Rolling Stones and The Doors.
Great show, so very glad I got a chance to see it in DC and in such an intimate setting.

I was sorry they didn't play "Signed DC". That, and the idiot behind me yelling "Little Red Book!" throughout the set were the only (minor) dissapointments.
When they finally did play Little Red Book he started yelling "Hey Joe!", which Arthur didn't even sing on the first Love album.
A great night. Our seats were great!

i think a fine system should be implemented for people who request "freebird" at any show other than a lynyrd skynyrd. it was funny the first i heard it in the 80's not so much anymore

It made me chuckle.
It was just such a silly heckle and something about its deliverey in amongst all the Love song requests, made it hilarious.

he has also suggested that it's raining men should be the new free bird, and that any time you feel the urge to yell out free bird, you should yell it's raining men instead.
Yeah, great show. I felt as if I was transported back in time. Every song has a truly personal feel about it and when Arthur belted, "I want my freedom!" I got chills. The crowd was really into the show and that clearly affected the band. They played as if it was the last show on earth. A good time was had by all. You Set the Scene was my favorite song of the night.
The opening band was…well, how can I say it politely? Cringe-worthy in parts (hand-clapping anyone?) but with good vocals. Their synths HAVE to GO. I was relieved that their set was a short one.
Oh and Birchmere is a weird place but it really worked for this show.

I don't know Love, but Kosmo and Kurosawa's recommendations (ah, make that effusive urgings) are enough for me. Alas, i've been swamped with work and in the midst of my organizations fall membership meeting, so I couldn't go to the Birchmere.
But I'll check 'em out, as it's apparently required listening.

Love is Arthur Lee's band from the late 60s. Sort of etherial Psychedelic without too much spaciness. In other words, the classic song structure doesn't get lost in all of the cool instrumentation. Very good. Unfortunately, I couldn't go either. Not a choice I wanted to make.
my recommendation is to buy…
<img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00000346Y.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" alt=" - " />
it's a retrospective of the classic early love songs plus the entire forever changes record

Truly a bizzarre band. My friends and I are still trying to figure out what was going on with that group. I was very dis-pleased with The Pleased.

that would be a Melodica, its a Harmonica with a keyboad. Ben Folds uses one.

I quess there'a at least something to be said for the fact that I remember the tune and words of the chorus….2 days later and it's still burned in my brain.
Oh Canada..won't you please…take us over…
