Crossword Help?

My company is coming to an end, and while I wait for a couple interviews I have, I've decided to do the crossword from the Express each day. But today, I need a little help.

I've filled in a good bit, but one of the answers (or what should be an answer based on other answers filling the letters in) doesn't make sense to me. I think it might be sports-related, which is my weakest subject.

Anyway, the clue is "Packs down firmly," and the answer seems to be "Tamps." I don't get it. Anyone?
tamp P Pronunciation Key (tmp)
tr.v. tamped, tamp·ing, tamps
1. To pack down tightly by a succession of blows or taps.
2. To pack clay, sand, or dirt into (a drill hole) above an explosive.
Weird, I tried looking the word up and didn't find anything on dictionary.com. Of course, maybe I didn't look hard enough. Thanks, Bede. P.S. I'm bored.
I was able to find "tamps" on both dictionary.com and answers.com.

Alright, fine. Maybe I didn't look at all. It must have been all that "Arch Campbell's dick" talk that distracted me.

has the post decided what they're going to do about their print crossword yet? i used to do it daily, but got really frustrated a few months ago at how easy or hard some of them were … i noticed they printed an apology a month ago or so saying they were still searching for the right guy or service to run on a daily basis, but i haven't checked in since then …
