Be careful, cable modem is shared bandwidth, so when they advertise 10 MB per second, that's if no one else is on at the same time. Otherwise it's 10 MB per second shared access. The truth is both are relatively new technologies and are down sometimes.

I've had both Starpower Cable modem and Verizon DSL and they were about the same in the long run. Once the service is up and running, it generally works fine. Sometimes, it takes a while to get the service running at peak.

I waited a year and a half for Comcast to get Cable modem in my area, and they never had it before I moved to SF, so don't hold your breath.

I tried DirecTV Broadband, which is fast on the download, but very slow on the uptake.

The best thing to do is sign up with a cable company, then get cable modem, then cancel cable TV - they can't turn it off so you get free cable with your cable modem. Or, buy a cable modem and use it with you Digital cable TV (if you must have a box for Fox Sprots World and BBC America) - in my experience, they haven't been able to turn off either if you only have one.

Outside of networking with my router, I've never had a problem of slowdown with the Comcast cable connection. With DSL, I had to use signal boosters and change my browser since Microsoft claims that Windows isn't designed for high-speed capabilities.

my earthlink DSL is great…..fast , never down and it is NOT a shared line, unlike cable modem….
