Brokeback Mountain vs The State of the Union

It dawned on me that the perfect counter programming to order to avoid the "The State of the Union" address would be to go out instead and see "Brokeback Mountain".

It's also recommended that one goes to see it at the still independently managed P&G Theatre in Greenbelt at 7:30pm, instead of one those corporate chains…

I went the Brokeback Mountain when the Redskins were losing their playoff game. Or maybe it was the playoff game they won. Don't remember.

Cinema Arts Theater in Fairfax is still independently owned and operated. We go there as much as possible.

I went this past Friday afternoon. Most excellent. Love seats with lumbar support.
if you want to avoid the "Distaste of the Union', why not make yourself heard tonight? bring pots 'n pans and help raise a ruckus right outside of the 'gig'.

worldcantwait.net and other organizations will be holding drown-out-the-SOTU noisefests in over 60 US cities, including here in DC by the reflecting pool. i'll be there, wish you would be too!!

i love those protestors who stand outside of the white house, on that section of street closed to traffic, and just shout away about the all-meat buckets of distate that whaffs away from their mega-moans. they're so cute . . . i love you . . . so cute . . . and such a bunch of slaves to the going away. i've always wanted to protest protestors, but you know how that 'ole joke goes.

I knocked over a few pro-life protesters on my run on the Mall last week. Morons need to watch where they are going. Was fun knocking them over. Managed to taunt a few others as well.

Susan Albert Loewenberg, producing director; Adapted from The Scopes Trial By Peter Goodchild; Starring: Edward Asner; James Cromwell; Sharon Gless
The Scopes trial, in a 1925, small-town Tennessee courtroom, set the stage for ongoing national debates over the separation of church and state in a democratic society, debates that continue to this day. Americaâ??s foremost radio theater company brings to life the play originally written for radio broadcast and adapted from the trial transcripts. Asner, Cromwell and Gless will work with one lucky theatre student to bring to life this vital chapter in American history. (cast subject to change) [although at this point it seems solid]

this should be lots of fun, at busboys & poets. and by fun, i mean the opposite of fun.

8:00 PM (Langston Room) STATE OF THE UNION EVENT
The President is still lying… Troops are still dying… Now the Pentagonis spying… You can be sure that the President's speech writers are working in overdrive to prepare for his upcoming State of the Union Address. But there's no fooling the people. With his approval ratings low and sinking, it's clear the lame promises of success in Iraq just don't cut it. Instead of sitting home alone shouting at your TV in anger and frustration, watch with Cindy Sheehan , Ann Wright and many others as CODEPINK women and Gold Star Families host open Mic night. Games and prizes. More info atdc@codepinkalert.org.

"such a bunch of slaves to the going away." huh? the going away? never heard this turn of phrase before. before you resume your attacks on me, maybe you could satisfy my curiosity.

as to yours and rob_gee's kneejerk dismissive reaction to protesters in general, you're either apathetic, pathetic, supporters of fascism, or simply enjoy denegrading others to feel better about yourselves. not a problem, except for the rest of us, and after all, it takes all kinds to make the world go 'round.

kosmo offered his idea of a counter-programming for individuals who didn't want to watch the SOTU. i simply offered another one, just as fun….well, if noise is your kind of fun. this is a slapstick protest; not every protest has to be for media attention or a serious show of force. noone going to this event expects W to come clean on the stolen elections of 2000, '02, and '04, or the 911 whitewash report, or the domestic spying program since before 911, or the falsified rationale for the iraq war, or a complete lack of any progressive viewpoints on network news.

obviously rob_gee and walkonby have a pathalogical aversion to any protest, whether it's seroius or light-hearted. in other words, they're fine with the notion that our country is now a corporatist/fascist form of gov't, bankrupt, propoganda-filled, and hijacked by a cabal that's been on the move since the reagan years, culminated by a small group of far-right xtian reconstructionists owning the 4 companies that tally over 50% of the US votes- paperless, vote-switching, non-open source codes, hackable, non-verifiable, and for the first time since '88, (when we began using exit polls as a general benchmark to gauge elections,) delivering voter tallies at complete odds with the nat'l election exit polls. an electronic theft of the senate majority, a 'president' who didn't win either election, an administration who initially refused to investigate 911, then underfunded it, limited the scope of the inquiry and refused to testify under oath about it, then exploited it endlessly for political gain, and a lapdog muzzled press…….nah, screw protesters. speaking up is for losers.

so since any protest or alternative activity, (and let's face it, seeing Brokeback Mtn in this context during/instead of the SOTU is a form of protest,) is for losers, i guess we won't see those two out on the town tonight.

nah, they'll be too busy sitting on their asses, or rather knees, jerking off in front of the tv every time Bush pulls out the terror/security card. good luck, fellas, you're going to need a bucket; although i'm sure in your cases, a tiny shotglass is all you'll need, if you can even manage that…..

happy SOTU activities for the rest, all!!
we agree, but i can't remember if rob-gee likes me or not . . . it's so confusing in here sometimes. and then there's this "junior" mafia of an inspector deck insulting me with his/her opinion of my opinions of his/her opinion. do frosted cheerios and margarine sprays effect you like this, as well? go bang your pot and pans, go bang a hooker on tenth street for all i carebear. go bang a dang long until jesus builds your hotrod. say what makes you look good, like oprah, my dear, or drink vaseline in the lobby of some deserted motel in fear. either way . . . i love you like i love my beer.
Can someone please remind me how Bush "stole" the 2004 election?

remind, as in, you've been told already? or lay it out to you from scratch? can't blame ya, charlie, if you haven't heard a peep about it; countdown with k. olberman was the only program on any network that even raised the question: something is completely askew here, shouldn't we investigate these claims?

there's mark crispin miller's book "fooled again"

there's the recent GAO report

there's fitrakis/wasserman's 2 books

there's also upcoming books by Freeman (statistician), g. pallast, and others, blackboxvoting.org, the televised 90 second hack of a diebold machine with howard dean, etc.

4 rightwing co.s own the paperless, closed source, unverifiable and hackable machines that count over 80 million (over 60%) of the US votes. countless testimony in Nov 2004 of touchscreen voteswitching from kerry to bush, but zero reports of the opposite, many reports of 4-10,000 votes cast for bush in precincts where there are only 1000 registered voters (but no corresponding 'glitches' the other way, which would be expected if these were honest mistakes), the complete divergence of the exit polls from the votecount for the first time. indeed, the exit polling data was changed overnight to fit the election results. in NM, which W 'won' by 8k votes, in every single county where the diebold machines were used, kerry lost, even in the democratic strongholds. for those areas of NM that didn't use the diebold machines, the exit polls and election results matched.

"For example, they would have you believe that, in direct contradiction to how elections have gone in Ohio for decades, itâ??s now routine for boards of elections to record that 100% of the precincts are reporting, and then suddenly add 18,615 more votes at 1:43 a.m. after the polls have been closed since 7:30 p.m. and 100% of the precincts had been reporting since approximately 9 p.m.

Or that 18,615 Miami County votes could come in late with an impossibly consistent 33.92% for Kerry, as if somebody had pushed a button on a computer with a pre-set percentage—just as the GAO says it can be done.

Or that it's ok for a Democratic county election official, with a lucrative contract from the Republican-controlled Board of Elections (BOE), to admit he doesn't really know whether the vote count had been doctored.

Or it's fine for BOE officials take election data home to report on from their personal PCs. Or for central tabulators to run on corporate-owned proprietary software with no public access. Or for BOE officials to hold up vote counts late into the night that time and again miraculously provide sufficient margins for GOP victories, as with Paul Hackett's recent failed Congressional race in southwestern Ohio.

Or for one precinct to claim a 97.55% turnout when a Free Press/Pacifica canvass quickly found far too many people who didn't vote to make that possible.
There is clearly no end to this story"

http://www.freepress.org/departments/display/19/2005/1556

there is a ton of gathering info that even i was skeptical of at first, until i went thru it as much as i could. i believe a nat'l investigation is required; you might want to at least check out one of the books mentioned and come to your own conclusion.

ps-walkonby, gotta give you props for that quickwitted mink stoles response. :D

Walkonby is speaking in the nearly indecipherable, yet charmingly colorful, native suburban patois.

ps - Bush didn't steal the 2000 election. Ralph Nader and his supporters handed it to him on a silver platter. As for 2004, the Democrats handed that one to him by nominating John Kerry. And they're already falling over themselves to give the 2008 election to the Republicans too, by nominating that other non-starter, Hillary.
