GBV Roll Call

What time did the show end?
I just read a review from the kid who got the setlist and he said that Dont Stop Now was on the setlist but they did not play it. A Salty Salute was not on the setlist either, like I said, I think they are dropping some of the regular songs for some older ones.

I think the show ended sometime between 12 and 12:30. They came on around 9:20.

How's the new bass player fitting in?That could have an impact on the setlist as well.

I thought it was a bad match when I saw them in Philly, but he fit right in last night. Nate seems to be dealing with it better, although he was plastered last night, so hard to tell. But he was great last night.
Glad to hear that you enjoyed yourself, pollard.

I was there… and the band was good. But I left after a little over an hour, right after 'Beg for that wheelbarrow' song. I didn't leave because the band was bad… but I just wasn't in the mood for a three hour show. When Bob Pollard came onstage, he showed everyone the set list–there were about 50 songs on it.. and I slightly winced–I just couldn't hang that long.

Another reason why I didn't hang for the entire show it's that I'm not terribly familiar with GBV's large body with work. I only have one of their CDs, last year's, 'Universal Truths and Cycles'. It felt more like a test of endurance to stay and listen to a lot of songs I've never heard before. There was also something about the band getting increasingly more drunk as the show went along that I just wasn't digging. I hope they were still legible by the time they did that second encore.

I guess that was it–my first time seeing GBV. They played many of the songs from their new one, 'Earthquake Glue', and I think I'll be picking it up in a bit.

Those were my impressions. Hopefully I'll dig the band more if they come around next time. :)
I don't have a ream of GBV myself. It helps that the first time I saw them was on a crazy Friday night, so I could get drunk along with the band (though not nearly as drunk, I assure you).

I have the newer albums – Isolation Drills, Universal Truths and Earthquake Glue. Just picked up Bee Thousand, but haven't even listened to it. I'm not sure I would have dug a 3-hour show, by myself and sober, either.

I'm also not planning on 'catching' up and buying seven, eight or nine more GBV albums, much less all the Pollard output.

Hopefully, PR, next time they're around it will be a weekend night – if so, come with us and drink cheap beer! <img src="http://pages.prodigy.net/rogerlori1/emoticons/beer1.gif" alt=" - " />
Yeah there is no need to buy all the albums unless you really love the band, and even then, probably don't need all the albums, I have 32 GBV cds and that is not including the Pollard and side project ones, no need for it.

I would suggest to both of you this, buy Propellor and the Greatest Hits, that should do you ok.

Oh and they do tend to keep it together even though really drunk, Bob may just mumble in between songs. And there really is only two of them that do most of the drinking. The encores are really the best part, so try and stick around for the whole show at least once.

Love the advice –thanks. Should I get both of those, even though I have the albums I listed? And are you talking the new Greatest Hits, "Human Amusements at Hourly Rates"?

Yeah I would say both, only because I really love Propellor and if I remember correctly there are only two songs off of that on the greatest hits, and yes it is the new greatest hits, should give you a sampling of a lot of the albums you dont have as well as the new stuff. And a lot of it are songs they play live, so is a good show primer. Although owning Earthquake Glue and Universal Truths allows you to hear a lot of the songs they will be playing until the next album comes out. I just read today that they will start they will take most of December off and start touring again in January.

i heard that they've got at least the next album already done, and are working on the one after that. i know that's how they like to work.

will have to look toward january. glad to see that they didn't play official ironman rally song, probably my favourite song.
i was there it rocked. best of the three gbv shows i've seen this year, top 3 ever. recher is FAR though. it would have to be someone nearly as awesome for me to go back, but the venue itself is quite nice. no hard alcohol, maybe because it was the old bass player's thing…
