DC101-maybe a reason why DC has no music scene..

These are the bands that will battling the last band standing contest in order to open the Chili Cook-Off. Say what you will about the DC cook-off, but for a band it's good exposure..at least a stage where all your gear fits..
- Junk Food: "voted DC's #1 cover band", they want an f-ing cover band! Their website had them cover "Time After Time" by C. Lauper for christ's
sake.
- Victory Twin: "Influences range from Sugarcult & SR-71 to classics such as Van Halen and Bon Jovi." The single on their site is called "Bethlehem Steal." The first line of lyrics are "Maryland state line coming down the
grapevine, I don't want to stay but I don't want to go home." not joking…..
- LSS: The best of Glen Burnie, MD. What more can I say….
- Fourth Element: Hoobastank meets Rusted Root… geez. complete shite.
- Gold Mind Squad: Good Charlotte clones, from the website: "GMS broke the attendance record @ Londontown Hall in Edgewater, MD." WOW!
- Lionize: Sublime wanna-bees, but like 5 years too late.
- 33 West: F-ing crap sounds like Queensryche with a reggae twist. Not making this up.
- Falls Church: non-descript sucking. Hoobastank seems to be the flavor of the day.
- Spectre: could not find
- VooDoo Blue: "In the Up-N-Comers section of the January 2001 issue of Teen Beat magazine," I guess they wouldn't be teen beat anymore….
- The Speaks: who knows
- Evenout: got tired of reading this crap.
WHO ARE THESE BANDS AND WHO THE HELL LIKES THEM!!! One interesting thing,
they seem to be from a totally different planet. Not one of the bands has played Black Cat, DC9, Velvet, etc. Also, many are from Baltimore, but no one has played Ottobar, Talking Head, etc. I guess this bizzarro world is completely over my head….

Well, not to try to bring down Fico's arguement at all, cause I agree with him, but The Speaks are from arl. and have been around a bit. I know they played DC9 and also State theatre and live on penn last year I believe. They were supposed to play again this year too. Voodoo Blue won the spot to open the HFStival this year. Evenout have also been around, and I think may have somehow opened for some Worrystones/Fighting Gravity crap show at 930 before.
I was shocked I didn't recognize anymore than that however. Well, except for Gold Mine Squad, whom Fico's comment already took care of.
It really is incredibly sad. DC101 local licks play better music than this group of nobodies. There had to be better bands than this. Assuming Cartel submitted, I can name two right of the bat better than this crew.
Apparently Frat Rock is all that matters in DC. Pathetic.

Well, not to try to bring down Fico's argument anymore, but two minutes of searching shows that most of these bands have played Recher and Fletchers, a couple have played HFStivals, and one of them - Evenout - has played the 9:30, Merriweather, and Nissan.
Your friend should do a little more fact checking….

And they qualified as one of the Top 50 bands to compete and then play at the American Music Awards (some award show).
note: My factoid doesn't claim opinion either way on these bands.

I'm assuming that a lot of those bands are with some agency that organizers for events like the Chili Cookoff go to.

Yes, Evenout did play 9:30 club supporting Third Eye Blind, Sister Hazel, and at a Budweiser True Music Event. Yes, the slot and venue are good, but the music is rubbish. So depressing…
If someone were even to mention those names on this board, they would be torn to pieces.

WHO ARE THESE BANDS AND WHO THE HELL LIKES THEM!!!
What we got are bunch of bands that played at either TT Reynolds, Fletchers (Noise In The Basement Live), Recher Threatre, HFStival, opened for a national recording act or all the above.
Evenout, Voodoo Blue and Gold Mine Squad opened for national acts at the 930 Club. The Speaks and 33 West played at the Battle of the Imports 2 months ago at MIR. That's what I know from these groups.

After seeing this band open for Old 97's at live in penn, i can speak for them. They were one of the worst bands I've ever seen. Totally cop their whole sound from STP and bands of that ilk.

Gold Mine Squad blows. I saw them open up for somebody at the Recher. They are horrible. It is pretty bad when a band makes Good Charlotte seem tolerable.
Evenout blows too. Saw them open up for Fuel at Merriweather sessions this summer. They have a crew of chicks (about 8, and one is dating or married to lead singer) that go to all of their shows and that makes up their fanbase. Then I was Downtown Baltimore walking around and realized there was a Power Plant Live occurring that night. So I grabbed a bite and figured the show was free and decided to stick around. Well it ended up being Evenout (this was after seeing them at MPP) and there was about 15 people in the audience (no shit) and 8 of them were the chicks!

Who really gives a rat's ass who plays at the DC101 festival?!? Maybe you've never heard the station before. Last time I checked, it was run-of-the-mill, top-40 alternative crap. The people who listen, the DC101 fans, will be people who enjoy run-of-the-mill, top-40 alternative crap. So, I'm guessing, by the descriptions at the top of this thread, that this festival has been concocted to perfection for the people who enjoy DC101. If this festival was lined up with a half dozen indie/underground critical darlings, it would not only make no sense whatsoever, but it would be insulting to the fans that support the station. If you're the kind of person who enjoys something a bit more original or interesting, this festival doesn't show up on your radar.

Typical
DC101 Fare
Is that the Greaseman? Haven't seen him around in ages. I have a quick story about that.
If it hasn't been figured out yet, I'm an elem. school art teacher. The other day I had a new student to my school bring in some smocks. One just happened to be a DC101 t-shirt from ages ago. It had the old logo with the lightning bolts on the front. And on the back was Greaseman's signature in Sharpie…
