Exactly. They went back to the core group (plus Josh the keyboardist) and went wild. They even played "Faded" and brought out "Retarded"!

I was up front and center at that show with a couple of folks from the Whigs mailing list.

2004/04/01 The Crystal Method/DJ Hyper
2004/04/22 Sleater-Kinney/The Thermals

Only been hitting the local concert scene for a few years obviously. Wish I had a time machine so I could go back and see the great concerts I've missed at the 9:30 Club, like the Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, R.E.M., the White Stripes, Flaming Lips, et al.
I just remembered when I saw the Charlatans UK in 1994 on the "Up To Our Hips" tour, that was pretty awesome, so was Smashing Pumpkins w/Swervedriver in 1993. It seems as though there used to be some pretty amazing double bills years ago, you don't see that quite as much anymore. It was great to see the Jesus and Mary Chain w/Curve and Spiritualized, the Cocteau Twins w/Galaxie 500, Urge Overkill w/Eugenius. All great, great shows.
i don't remember the years on any of these. i'm getting old…

in no particular order…

old and new 9:30

1. BELLE AND SEBASTIAN (2003?)
2. THE FAINT (2003?)
3. CORROSION OF CONFORMITY (animosity tour?)
4. ROLLINS BAND/BLACK FLAG TRIBUTE
5. DAG NASTY w/ GOVERNMENT ISSUE (1985 or so?)

Is that the DOA/GI/Dag Nasty show when the club was still WUST? That one was pretty amazing. I'm pretty sure that was Dag Nasty's first show.
A couple that come to mind:

Afghans Whigs - Sept '99 [mentioned above]

Afghan Whigs - June '96 w/Howlin' Maggie

James - Feb '97

Buffalo Tom - Feb '96 (8-10 inches of snow that afternoon)

Jeff Buckley - not sure of date - I believe it was his last appearance at the old club though.

Drive-by Truckers - September 24, 2004
(I saw them last night. If it's any indication - we're in for a real treat during this one. They are definitely no longer the same band that I've seen many times over the last few years in small dingy bars. But this isn't necesarily a bad thing: They are much more accomplished musicians - Jason Isbell is a rising star - and they are a bit more polished. They're gonna rock the club.)

Another notable show - I guess - was the Counting Crows first time @ the old club. This was right before their 1st record broke big. It was VERY COLD night - The Gov't actually closed because it was so cold & icy. Only about 200 people there. We were standing right up front and kept getting dripped on by the sweat from Duritz's rasta extensions. Oh - & George Stephanopoulos was there. Rockin' the vote.
JSBX/JesusLizard/SoCulture/CiboMatto NYE 97
Afghan Whigs June '96
Afghan Whigs Sept '99
Coldplay
Don't know if this one counts though…
Smashing Pumpkins when it was still the WUST (or whatever it was called)

maybe - but this one has better bands.
;)
The Verve – Fall of 1997
BRMC/Warlocks – Hurricane show last year
X with the Fags – last year I think
The Verve – Summer of 1995, old club
Doves with a great opener by the unknown Strokes

Honorables:
That Stereophonic/Charlatan show was pretty damn good
The first Polyphonic Spree show last summer was great
Guided By Voices – 2002 I think
Grandaddy, but not the one with SFA
The 1997 New Years Eve ball with JSBE, Jesus Lizard and Southern Culture kicked ass
Motorhead last year was really good
Urge Overkill at the old club was memorable, as was Monster Magnet shortly thereafter
