Didn't see the earlier show but everyone across the country seemed to pan that tour. Also, we were one of the few venues to get the post Field Day tour which was only a stripped down show while they happened to be in the States. In my mind, it was sort of like acoustic Spiritualized even though it wasn't acoustic. Some friends of mine saw Spiritualized a month or so after the disappointing 930 show and reported to me that the band wasn't "stripped down" and they were back to their usual bombastic space/psych rock-style, which made me feel cheated and even more pissed about the DC show.
top 5 shows you have seen at 930

I keep remembering other good ones…Buffalo Tom and Bettie Serveert at the old club in '92 or '93. By the way, if you haven't seen the Betties, check 'em out later this year, probably at Iota (it amazes me how few people see those Iota shows).. Always a damn good show! And yeah, I saw Weezer open for Live at some point at the new club…Weezer was the better of the two.
Favorite show downstairs at the old club?? Mine was Buck 'O Nine back in '95 or so…

Off the top of my head:
Dwarves 1990 (by far the best 20 minute set Ive ever seen in my life, smoke bombs galore choking the audience and Blag dry humping a topless woman onstage, effing amazing!)
Hank Williams III 2001 (nuff said there)
Helmet 1991 (I was never a fan of anything past their first album but they played a show in the summer and in the fall and both kicked my ass)
Shudder To Think 1991 (Chris's last show with the band, very emotional and killer setlist, they even played their first ever recorded song!)
24-7 Spyz 1989 (they played twice that summer but the second show was far more memorable due to Peter pulling me up onstage and handing me the mic to sing "Grandma Dynamite" in its entirety)
honorable mentions:
Soul Brains 2003 (wanted to get tickets in '89 but SOLD OUT)
Living Colour 1989
Gwar 1989
Smashing Pumpkins 1991
Hole 1991
Body Count 1992
Dio 2002
Polyphonic Spree 2003 (both nights)
Sex Pistols 2003
Kingface 1997
Damned 1989
Mojo Nixon 1989 (went straight to the club after seeing Public Enemy play a festival at Anacostia Park in SE that afternoon, a surreal day to be certain haha)

Dismemberment Plan's Farewell Show
this summer's Polyphonic Spree
Sleater Kinney's All Hands on the Bad One tour
Flaming Lips Yoshimi Tour
Belle and Sebastian Dear Catastrophe Waitress tour
NOTE that I'm not including this summer's wilco show (boring).
Worst shows:
Bright Eyes last summer (I love the music, but he was smashed and it was boring and the crowd was sleepy)
The Sea and Cake last summer (ugh)

Ever seen the Candy Snatchers? They're from VA Beach…been around forever. A bunch of sickos as well. If you like the Dwarves you'd love 'em.

I think I was at the 2000 show, or the one before it, post Pinkerton/breakdown pre-Green album. Great show too.
Old Club:
Janes Addiction, Nothing Shocking tour. Right when the energy was huge and they rocked big time. The whole club was a mass of bodies moving to the music.
Husker Du, Warehouse tour. All night Bob Mould stared at the camera person. Pure punk, and after the show the bassist was hanging out chatting with people. Thanked him for the great show.
Devo. Yeah a reunion thing, but they blew the place down. All the classics you wanted to hear, done how they should have been done.
The Orb, maybe 94? Right after Live 93 came out, real drummer, real bassist, triphonic sound (brought in two back stacks). Did a great set, and with the real musicians made it all the better.
The Go-Betweens. Australian pop that just never made it over here. THey were great, Alex Chilton opened and we were pissed he kept playing so long…
New Club:
Hard to leave it at 5, but I was at so many of the other shows people listed (Bebel wasn't bad I thought, though I hear the tour improved after that show).
Chemical Brothers, 1999. Bass. More Bass. Most Bass. Great set list, great lights, and for a "techno show" great interaction from the stage to the crowd.
Love and Rockets, Hot Trip to Heaven tour. This was killer, they did that album which is brilliant, their older material, and more bass than even the Chemical Brothers (and this is agreed on by the Monitor guy from the club who was there for both and many other shows). Oh and the Dandy Warhols opened the show.
Gomez, In Our Gun tour (a couple years back). Seen them there 3 times. This show was spot on. They did the songs justice, had a great set, and had energy.
Spiritualized 2003. Yes, this show. I saw them at the black cat (Betty Ford Clinic T-shirt on the bassist), the Ladies and Gentlemen tour at the 9:30, open for Siouxie around Pure Phase, and some other 9:30 show. This one was my favorite. They did a lot of Amazing Grace, an album I love, didn't have all the Bombast that I think was clogging up their set (listen to F**ked up inside if you want to hear how great they were from the start). Sure Jason wasn't jumping like a madman all over the stage, but he did a great set. Didn't really like Phaser opening though.
Sex Pistols, 2003. Yeah they are old farts now, but they did it right, play that album add 2 songs and be done with it. No new crap, nothing off a solo record. And their crew were great, they said it was their favorite tour (Johnny is not that bad I guess).
Almost there, would be Stone Roses when it was still WUST though I think IMP put that one on. Killer 1 1/2 hour set. We left going, that was perfect.
