Also as I uderstood it, if you dont smoke for five years, your chances of getting smoking related cancer are the same as a non-smoker, making the child parent second hand smoke thing moot.

second hand smoke is supposedly worse than first hand, and if a child grows up 18 years in a house with second hand smoke…that ain't good. For my best friend as an example: he's never had a cigarrette in his life, but both parents smoked, and so did a live-in girlfriend for years. He was diagnosed with lung cancer last winter, and he is only 31 years old.

This does not fit well with your earlier statistics….. Whether you like it or not most lung cancer is self-inflicted and as such I guess it is pretty hard to raise sympathy/charitable money for it.

HELLO…SMOKING RELATED…second hand smoke is smoking related. doesn't mean the person smoked.

Smoking related cases makes up 90% of lung cancer victims. All of these cancers were preventable. What is the point spending millions on a cure when prevention would be 90% effective and cost free?

Try and distance yourself from your own personal situation.

I never smoked, I always hated smoking. If I get lung cancer I am going to be suing the blackcat.

you can't make other people stop smoking. suing isn't going to do anything to save your life. and I don't see why, just because it's "self-inflicted" those people don't deserve a cure as well. that's a very harsh, unforgiving, republican way of looking at things.

But you can ban cigarette smoking in public spaces and tax the shit out of cigarettes. More lung cancers will be prevented that way than by spending $100 millions on a cure.

again, you can't stop people around you from smoking. your parents, your loved ones…and what about OTHER nasty shit in the air? like car pollution and smog. cancer happens…saying people deserve agonizing death is just inhumane.

I don't mind the ribbons at all. But I do still laugh at the losers who still have this sticker on their cars. "Like father, like son, no second term"….Frickin' morons.

on the topic of research-vs-prevention: for fuck's sake! It reminds me of how right-wingers used to say (and probably still do) that AIDS was God's way of punishing gays. Even if most lung cancer comes from smoking, there will always be a certain percentage that is caused by other things, including simply having to live in a nasty smog-infested environment. Prevention is important but cancer research is necessary too. And in some ways the argument is moot: it's not like lung cancer research is a completely separate endeavor from, say, breast cancer research. All cancer is related, and efforts towards eradicating and treating cancer benefit everyone.
