Turning 21

well, I'm up for pretty much anything. I have a boyfriend and not many friends…I just want to do something 21-ish. but not being practiced in the art of legality, I have no idea what people over the age of 21 do or where they go.

so…yeah.
If you wanna straddle between top 40/hip-hop/commercial dance, hit Fur (NE DC) on a Friday night. If the clubs are too much for you, & you're more of a "bar chick" per se hit up Adams Morgan with your BF. Get drunk 'til you barely can't take anymore, take a cab to your bed for the evening, & have borderline aggressive birthday sex.

And since it's your birthday, please ensure that you are the recipient of some birthday head. Birthdays without birthday head are so incomplete. It's your day. You only get one day out of the year to act the fool, & this is it. Demand what you want & be firm about it. Since it's your birthday, they/he will be forced to comply. Happy birthday in advance, by the way . . .
The Director is right…give some examples of ideally what you like doing (dancing, talking with friends, live music, etc) and I'm sure someone can point you in the right direction.

I only go to maybe 3 bars, since they're all in Alexandria and I can walk or drive in under 3 minutes, so I'm probably not a big help. Plus, I'm an old man and don't know what the kids do anymore.

yeah but nkotb I don't even know any bars…I'm grasping at straws, here.

There used to be a great dive bar called Samantha's on L, but that's long gone. I would have suggested that.

I agree with nkotb, hit the M street/Dupont area and with a small group and see how many bars you can hit. There's quite a few there.

And don't pay for a single drink - it's your 21st for god's sake!
If you do hit the M street/Dupont area, for God's sake avoid Rumors. By any means necessary. If you wanna hit up a nice, sexy "date" spot you can go to Ozio. Be forewarned though, if you can't get into VIP it kinda sucks. I'll be glad to get you in if you like. It's owned by a cool Greek family I know.

There's spots like Sign of The Whale around "M" Street, etc.
Drew Barrymore hangs out at the Fox and Hound.

I've always found the more effort you put into these things, the bigger the disappointment. Just gather up some friends, hit a bar (I'm always fond of the Fox & Hound or Big Hunt because you can actually talk to each other) and get drunk.

I was thinking along legal lines. no pun intended.

you guys are really no help at all.
I'm trying to rub elbows with some celebs. Besides, she was my first crush when I was a kid (that wasn't a cartoon, anyway).

ok. apparently i am the only one who may be able to actually give a decent suggestion…

so samantha, try the wonderland ballroom in columbia heights - two floors, can dance and drink upstairs or can sit and drink downstairs. if you get there before midnight, you can sit outside. plus, if you decide to go, the music is great…
it's one of my favorite places to go.

if this isn't your cup of tea tell us what is. i'm 23 so obviously i'm out quite a bit… plus, my birthday is next week too. so i'm trying to figure all that out as well ;)

21 shots
turning 21 sucks…you're not jailbait anymore so smackie loses interest in you and drinking is now legal so you lose interest in it.

I'd go with the threesome idea, at least you'll remember your 21st for quite a while.

And a trip to the emergency room?
drinks at Russia House on florida and conn ave. good selection of vodkas. then head over to Royal Palace across the street for a nice, fancy chinese dinner.
Samantha, out of this pile of astonishingly crappy advice, I'd second Miss Pretentious' recommendation of Wonderland Ballroom. It's what a bar for adults really should be – a real neighborhood bar, easy to strike up a conversation, good music, no attitude, and welcoming to people from outside the neighborhood… every time I go there I always end up chatting with someone cool and staying later and drinking more than I planned. Upstairs is a lot of fun on weekends, some crazy dancing up there sometimes. If you tell me when you'll be there I'll cover y'all's tab… I have good memories of my 21st at a cool (alas now defunct) club in DC, I hope you will too.

you could also do something crazy and go to Lesbian night at Chaos :D

i really do love wonderland. i've never had a bad time there and it's where i always want to take my friends when they are in from out of town. it's the perfect place to do some ass-shaking.

plus, one time i was there i found some really sweet, huge black plastic aviators just sitting on one of the wall shelves… sitting lonely and awkward with the empty cups. needless to say i wore them the rest of the night, danced up on the (half)stage thing with some random girl and had a blast. the glasses are sitting on my dresser right now and i still wear them.

so now… the real question is, where do i spend my 24th birthday??
