From: "The Dears" <information@thedears.org>

Sometime a little while ago, we completed our third full length album. We are really proud and are very much looking forward to everyone playing the crap out it. As clichÃ? as this may sound, it's by far the 'best work we've ever done.' But seriously, it doesn't sound like anything else and it's pretty relentless. As (I think) we've mentioned before, it is somewhat of a stripped down, raw affair. There is french horn in 2 songs and and saxophone in another. Though there is some mellotron-ny stuff, there are no real violins, violas or cellos. I guess that means that we're no longer "orchestral". Send complaints to gfy@thedears.org. Anyway, we recorded it in the splendour of our Parc X Manor (MTL) over the winter, mixed it in Greenpoint (Brooklyn, NYC) in March, and the final cut of the master arrived last week from Masterdisk (Manhattan, NYC). We've sent it around to our record companies and they tell us that they like it. Phew. Now they are going to do whatever it is they do !
to get the album into your hands. We are just putting the final touches on the artwork and then that's it.

The album is called GANG OF LOSERS. Here are the song titles, in order:

01. SINTHTRO
02. TICKET TO IMMORTALITY
03. DEATH OR LIFE WE WANT YOU
04. HATE THEN LOVE
05. THERE GOES MY OUTFIT
06. BANDWAGONEERS
07. FEAR MADE THE WORLD GO 'ROUND
08. YOU AND I ARE A GANG OF LOSERS
09. WHITES ONLY PARTY
10. BALLAD OF HUMANKINDNESS
11. I FELL DEEP
12. FIND OUR WAY TO FREEDOM

The album's title comes from a running joke that Benvie started a couple of years ago while we were on tour. Then after thinking about the phrase a lot more, it got all serious and became a bit of metaphor for this whole…thing. Anyway, thanks Benvie. The album clocks in at 48 minutes and you can drop a laser on that s**t as of the end of August 2006. Expect a single by June-ish. Maybe even a video for it. I think.

For now, you can hear "Fear Made The World Go 'Round" at http://www.myspace.com/thedears until Monday.

We've been trying out the new stuff in rehearsal and though the first couple of times were pretty brutal, we are finally starting to sound like a band again. We've got a few new pieces of gear to go with the new songs. Nat and Val are sporting a pair of pretty wicked slick Roland X6 keybards. I'm using a Korean Epiphone Casino for the most part (I've retired my '66 Jazzmaster) and I picked up a new analogue delay pedal from Moog. I also picked up a Roland AX7 'gui-board' or 'key-tar' which I play with our old SH-32 synth brain. Somehow, that thing is still with us; she's seen a thousand gigs and will likely see a thousand more. Astounding. French has a really loud Ampeg bass amp. I mean, it's loud. George ran out of drums to hit so he added a floor tom. As for Krief and his Stratocaster; from his cold dead hands…

We're doing a little warm-up gig at a small club around town tonight before we head down to Coachella this weekend. New songs + new gear x haven't played a gig in several months = could totally suck. At any rate it'll be interesting.

Here are some other shows coming up:

June

25 - Wireless, London, England (part of the festival with Depeche Mode, Goldfrapp, Gang of Four, Thomas Dolby(!) and more)
29 - Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, MontrÃ?al, Canada (at Metropolis)

20 - V Festival, Chelmsford, England (part of the festival with Radiohead, Beck, Bloc Party, Fatboy Slim, and more)
22 - Dublin, Marlay Park (with Morrissey, The Dandy Warhols, The Magic Numbers)

We are also planning a tour of Canada for the month of September. We haven't toured here proper in like 2 years. Shameful.

I think that's it for now. Looking forward to seeing you all soon, somewhere.

Update
May 1st, 2006

This past week was one of the most difficult ever for us as a band. We had to make an incredibly hard decision that has a direct effect on our future. Earlier this week our record label offered us a chance to record a cover song for a large corporation to be used in a commercial. In addition to using the song in the commercial they wanted us to put it on our record and potentially use it as a single. We turned down the offer(knowing the probable consequences), and our record label dropped us. Needless to say, this came at a bad time since we were a week away from recording our next record. At the moment we are weighing all of our options and still plan on recording next month. We will release another record, we just are not sure with what record label. We promise to keep you up to date with new information and as always check back here for new show dates and content.

its…..interesting…..

Orson

from CD Times

Like the Scissor Sisters before them, L.A. five-piece Orson are attempting to crack the UK before their home country, and with an album as good as Bright Idea, itâ??s no wonder there is a furious bidding war erupting between a host of UK major labels to sign them.

With a sharp, contemporary look, Orson grab the limelight even before their music â?? a heady mix of rock, pop and retro soul - is heard. So itâ??s a good thing that the punchy, quirky and undeniably commercial songs on Bright Idea more than live up to the hype.
Hopefully we'll see the new Von Bondies CD tentatively titled "Love, Hate, and then there's you" which I hope they keep because it's a great title…
Solo record from Idlewild's singer

Roddy's solo project!

Check out Roddy's solo project at www.robbywoomble.com His debut solo album will be released by Pure Records on July 24th of this year!

Here's a bit of info from the site, but check it for more:

Five of the eleven songs that make up 'My Secret is my Silence' were written with Roddy's Idlewild band mate and co-songwriter, guitarist ROD JONES, two with the album's producer (and BBC radio 2 folk musician of the year 2003) JOHN McCUSKER, two with childhood friend and singer in Glasgow's alternative folk band Foxface, MICHAEL ANGUS and one with acclaimed borders based folk singer KARINE POLWART. "These are songs that would have never lived with Idlewild, but are still very much a part of me. Being able to write with Rod, and John and Karine and Michael made me feel (for two weeks) like I was part of a new band, and this allowed me to feel free to describe myself in a way I've wanted to for a long time, in a context I was completely comfortable with, and I think it shows"

The album, recorded in South Yorkshire over nine days in March 2006, features a band made up of all the songwriters, as well as drummer DAVID GOW and bassist AILIDH LENNON (who is also Roddy's wife) from the Scottish band SONS AND DAUGHTERS. As well as appearances from some of folk music's most accomplished players, flautist MICHAEL McGOLDRICK, accordionist ANDY CUTTING and guitarist IAN CARR and popular folk singers KARINE POLWART, KATE RUSBY and DAVE BURLAND.

'My Secret is my Silence' is an album full of stories about language and communication, about nature and the people that surround us and make our environment. Inspired as much by the poetry of Robert Frost and George MacKay Brown as by the time Roddy has spent up in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, which has long been the source for many Idlewild songs and albums.

Yeah, the entire album was available to download on the atease message board this morning, but has now been removed. As tempting as it is, I think I'm gonna wait til the actual cd comes out and listen to it in its entirety.
