VINELAND
As the volume rises on local residents' opinions of the Vineland Music Festival, mayoral candidate Robert Romano weighed in Wednesday on the multiday event.
Romano's take on the festival mirrors that of many East Vineland residents working to derail the pop and rock concert: He's not against the festival itself, but rather the location.
''Obviously, the music festival is a double-edged sword,'' Romano said.
The first Vineland Music Festival is planned for Aug. 8 to 10 on a 570-acre farm near Sherman Avenue and Hance Bridge Road. It is expected to draw 35,000 to 40,000 people over three days, many of whom will camp out, festival organizers said. Roughly 90 acts are expected to perform on four stages.
While the festival is likely to provide some economic benefit to Vineland and the surrounding area, the event won't be the financial grand slam Mayor Perry Barse has predicted, Romano argued.
Barse has said the festival will bring international name recognition to Vineland, as well as pump hundreds of thousands of dollars into the local economy.
If this year's festival is a success, Barse said, it could turn into an annual event.
The mayor is seeking a third term in the May 13 municipal election.
Romano is a Vineland police lieutenant and son of the late former Vineland Mayor Joseph E. Romano.
Romano said he has signed a petition opposing the festival, which is being circulated by the local group Neighbors Against Rock Concert Site.
The candidate said he has concerns about the timing of the festival because of the heat and the likelihood traffic will interfere with the work of farmers in the vicinity.
''I think it's going to be a nightmare for the neighborhood and it's going to be a nightmare for traffic,'' Romano said.
He said his opinions are based in part on his review of preliminary site plans submitted to the city by the promoters.
Residents' concerns are being addressed during the city's ongoing negotiations with the promoters, Barse said.
Romano said the festival should be moved to a more suitable location, but he could not provide a specific site.
If he's elected mayor in May, Romano said he would not interfere with the festival, but a return date the following year would not be a given.
''If everything went good and traffic is not as bad as I think it's going to be, I would re-evaluate,'' he said.
Former city school board member Nick Girone also is running for mayor.
Girone said if he's elected, he would set up a task force made up of citizens and elected officials ''to evaluate the event from every angle'' to determine if it will be an ongoing event.
We could have another Field Day Fest scenario here.

The inaugural Vineland Festival originally scheduled for August 8-10 in Vineland, N.J., has been moved to early summer 2009, promoters announced January 25th.EVENT CANCELED!
Promoters Festival Republic and C3 Presents decided to back away from the initial time frame because of overall festival traffic in the northeast and big bands touring through the area at the same time, the promoters said in a statement.
After Festival Republic (Melvin Bennâ??s company and a division of Live Nation) and C3 announced Vineland, the promoters of Coachella announced a festival in the same market on the same weekend. Virgin Festival is also planned for that weekend.
"The co-producers did not want to force music fans to choose between three events on the same weekend," the statement said. "While disappointed with the delay, they believe the overall health of the festival business and the music industry takes precedent over any of their singular objectives."
Looks like Seth has only one direct competitor now!

Organisers of the Vineland Festival have decided to push back the launch of the event until 2009.
The announcement was made today in light of the fact that a rival festival â??All Points Westâ?? has been scheduled for the same weekend in the same state of New Jersey.
Vineland is jointly put together by organisers of Reading/Leeds and Lollapalooza and was scheduled to take place August 8-10 in Vineland, NJ.
The press release states that the organisers did not want fans to have to choose between three events the same weekend (they did not specify what events) and that the plan is to move the festival to â??early summer 2009â?.

Ehh, what about moving it to the following weekend or even late July? There's gotta be other reasons…

theory: the reason why festivals happen on same weekend is so organizers can share the cost of big tickets acts. they need a new weekend where they can pair up with another festie to share headliners.
less conspiratorial: time crunch. at this point they might not have enough time to secure a new site & permits, and then book big acts. you need the first two before you can do the booking.
