It WAS Chicken Shack's booze that contributed to Mac's issues–girlfriend troubles–and yes, his voice was already shot–however it wasn't Jimmie himself who egged him along. It was another JCS bandmember. I was there.
He also had issues keeping his pants on and asked my sister and I if we had a safety pin. He's definitely an entertaining character, and very, very nice. Apparently he and the girlfriend have reconciled and all is well now.
