nope. huffy has always been the target/walmart/kmart brand– they were never bike shop quality bikes.

I had a Huffy when I was a kid. It did me fine.
Many families don't have the money to spend $300+ on a child's bike, though maybe they would if they drank beer from a can.

Not to disagree, but:
http://www.huffybikes.com/heritage/ The 1973 Scout racer bike looks way more functional and usefull than the current "dual suspension wonderbikes" that wal-mart now sells. I dont think back then they were engineered quite so brutally to a price point. I bet a huffy in the 70's was the same price in dollars as one today, if not more…..

Huffy bikes have always sucked… maybe less than they do now. They're built of cast iron and they weigh a freakin' ton.
The thing about buying someone a crappy-ass bike -it can make the difference between someone learning to love biking and hating it. So it's worth a little extra dough, and you really don't need to spend a fortune.
The same goes for guitars by the way…

all kids should have a bike, no matter what the price you pay for it. Personally I say the cheaper the better to begin with. If the've never ridden a Giant/Trek/Gary Fisher or whatever name designer brand you want to throw in there….how will they know if their bike sucks or not? If they enjoy riding, as every kid should, then they can get a better bike next time. If the bike ends up collecting spiders in the garage then you haven't wasted a fortune, because we all know the resale value of bikes is awful.
*this is were, if my dad was still alive, he'd be telling us how he had to go to the scrap heap and find bits to build his own first bike when he was a kid.*
I won a Huffy one time…..it was okay until I bought my Trek 850, then realized what a total piece of shit my Huffy was.

Yeah and I bet when it was done it was better than that piece of honda shit.
Your really are a tight git aren't you. You bemoan not riding a boutique bike, but dont you have an ultegra equipped 853 framed road bike? :p
Kids bikes have poor resale because most of them are shit to begin with. If you buy an OK bike it will have ok resale and might not break hurting the rider and putting them off cycling forever.

My point was quite simple, but still missed by some dopes ;) I was just saying don't waste a fortune on a fancy bike until you know your child is going to love biking….and I was in my 40's before I got to spend a handsome fee for a bike so not being a hypocrit.

But my point is if you dont "waste a fortune" on a decent bike your child might never love cycling.
The difference between spending $200 at the local bike shop and $100 at wal-mart is vast.

Me too. I was able to push it to the top of the biggest hill in the neighborhood and ride it down really fast. That's all I wanted my bike to do at the time and I was happy with it. And I abused the hell out of it too so an expensive bike would probably have been a bad idea for me. But knowing what I know now about bike quality and safety, if I had kids, I would be getting them something better than a Huffy.

What the hell does a bike have to do with that?
