Vampire Weekend are the new....?

how did you measure said talent?
i don't understand what the huge uproar is. i liked cyhsy's debut, but not so much that i was gushing all over the place about it. i, however, really, really like vampire weekend. i don't know why everyone is treating them like they are god's gift to the world…but they are a good band.

i also don't read pitchfork and almost never read music blogs. so maybe if you stopped doing so, you a) wouldn't get so pissed off about all their attention and b) wouldn't let others' opinions of the music influence your own.

just a thought…because typically, a high percentage of these uber-buzz bands blow. but vamp weekend employ a lot of simple pop hooks that should have a lot more staying power than cyhsy. and no whiny vocals.
But how does one learn about new bands if not by reading pitchfork, music blogs, and god forbid, music venue chatboards?

Here's how the inevitable Vampire Weekend backlash is set to progress.
brilliant

"Only New York's Hugo Lindgren dissents; months ahead of the curve, he concedes their dancebility but notes that "[if] theyâ??d shown up at CBGB circa 1978, these outré Ivy League preppies probably wouldâ??ve been beaten with bicycle chains."

this kinda sums who i feel about several of these highly touted indie or otherwise bands… i.e. Cold War Kids, The Bravery
I heard that Vampire Weekend is peddling the backlash themselves, since backlash gets attention and sells records.

I don't get that. They look to me exactly like the Talking Heads did back then, and they were heroes of CBGB.
Maybe art schoolers have more coolguy cred than Ivy Leaguers.

And I wasn't around, but I'm guessing the type of people who hung around CBGB's in 1978 didn't beat people up with anything.

I'm just looking forward to the show tonight. They're easy on the ears.
when are they coming on tonight?

According to the RNR Hotel website, they are coming on at 9:45.

BTW, I think it is unfair to compare Vampire Weekend to Franz Ferdinand. FF put out 2 very good albums. CYHSY, however, put out one good album, and one extremely shitty one. Only time will tell.

I am liking the Vampire Weekend and hoping for a decent show tonight.
9:45 according to the rnr hotel website (since when do they put showtimes up there?)

I have an extra for tonight for face. If interested, send me a PM.
Funny the comparisons between FF and VW. I find them to be pretty comparable…both are music with lots of style and little heart.

Though I'll take FF's style over VW's style.

the lyrics of Walcott make me laugh.
and maybe miss cape cod a little.
Left early…couldn't take the oversold crowd who wouldn't shut up.
I'd only heard the "Kwazza" song before, so went to see them without having heard any of their music previously. Came away a fan. I found their songs to be clever and original, the beats inventive, the bassist, drummer, and especially the keyboardist very fine musicians, and the lead singer/frontman guy personable, gracious and witty. Their songs had me bopping and singing along ("Blake's got a new face"), and the whole show, at 50 minutes, was short and sweet and just enough. Yeah the place was crowded, but it's a puny venue. It was a good fun show. They sold it well, and now I'm gonna buy their record.
50 mins for a headliner?
I thought they sounded good. They only played one new song (which sounded great) and everything else off the LP. My only complaint was that they didn't play around with the arrangements. Most of the stuff sounded exactly like the album. They should have let the drummer go off a bit more.

The fifty minute set was fine with me. It was a $10 show on a weeknight.

And, yes, it was crowded…I could barely lift my arm to get a beer to my mouth. I am pretty quick to complain about noisy crowds but I thought people were pretty well behaved in the middle of the room.
