Mank, come on, Cobain's a talentless hack?? You don't have to love him or even like him, but I don't know how you can say talentless.

Cobaine was a talentless hack…YES YES YES!

Had he not killed himself and Nirvana had split up…..we'd still only be hearing about Grohl, Cobaine would've disappeared like the other one has.

What was he good at for crying out loud? His singing made Tom Waits sound like Charlotte Church, his lyrics could've been written by Forest Gump and his guitar playing could've been done by a Taliban shoplifter. His wife is more talented than he ever was…and that's saying something.

Biz Markie?!?

Pop music fans only know, "Just A Friend", but "Vapors" and "Nobody Beats The Biz" are bona-fide hip-hop classics.

Of course Rick James would know this.
Obviously, Guiny didn't know this.

How about all the kids from American Idol that have their crap all over the radio now? They had meteoric rises to fame, and they certainly didn't spend much time working hard to get there…eff all of those bastards!

The current luckiest manorwoman in music is The Bucket of Slime (TBOS), aka Matthew Rogers, that inexplicably became a finalist on last weeks American Idol. TBOS embodies all that is repellant about Americans. As a singer he channels Bruce Willis and no one else. He's loud, obnoxious, wholly insincere, and he feels that he is entitled to advance.

I thought that it was completely unlikely that TBOS would advance. Now that he has, I can't discount the possibility that he may eventually win the competition. [your personification of faith / idol here] help us all.

Is this an admission that you actually watch that crap?

Yes. I study music culture. I had seen occasional episodes of the first two seasons. This time I will probably torture myself with the whole sha-bang (pun intended).

One question that I have about AI is what can one infer from it about music education in the USA? So much tone-deafness…. Did you see the guy who the judges challenged to find five people on the beach who thought he was good? One of the five chumps told the judges that the singer was hitting all his notes but then admitted that he himself was tone-deaf. With that admission the judges (even Paula) laughed his ass out the door.

Another interesting aspect is the hatred of Simon, despite the fact that he is almost always dead on with his comments.

I'm confused, explain to me what the heck American Idol has to do with music?

It should be required watching as part of a marketing course.

hmmm…I actually like that Courtney Love photo.

It's almost as flattering as the soft-core sketches on her new record.

As I said, I study music culture. Every culture has its definition of music; AI's is different from yours and mine. If I only studied music itself then AI would be worthless to me because it offers nothing new to music and the performances are amateur. But as a social phenomenon it offers much to study.

Don't mess with culture
