Richard Buckner Roll Call

So the first of his 4 March dates is Tuesday night.

Anybody other than me and raebyddet going? Anybody?
I want to go on the Freedy Johnston night….Do we know, yet, about that whole "Songwriters' Showcase Featuring…"? I'm assuming, due to the plural possessive, both artists will perform songs they've written.

I'm not familiar with Buckner, but found this interesting:

Buckner's principal following, however, is not with the country audience, but the alternative rock one. Like Allen and Hancock, the guitarist's work is based in rootsy country traditions, but his lyrics are far too personal and ambitious for those who think of country music as virtually synonymous with Nashville. So, like those Lubbock musicians, he tends to appeal to open-minded rock fans, or adventurous general music fans, more than country ones. The alternative rock thread has been strengthened by Buckner's leadership of a San Francisco country-rock band, the Doubters (who do not appear on his album), and a support slot on a Son Volt tour in early 1996.
I think Buckner is pretty sexy, if nothing else. His "Since" album sits next to me as I type.

Not going, but I'd choose the Dale Watson night of the four. The Freedy Johnston night also includes Kenny Roby, who was lead singer of a pretty good alt-country band from Raleigh, Six String Drag…though his solo work is not very good.

Saw Buckner about 7-8 yrs ago open for Son Volt…sort of boring to me, though I've heard others swear by his live performances.
My friends who like country like Buckner, my friends who will only get as country as Yankee Hotel Foxtrot say "why are you listening to country." I really don't know where to put him, not country and I hate the term alt. rock.

Looks like M. Ward has been added to the bill.
I wont be there.

I dig Richard Buckner. He's a good live show. Looks like a giant lumberjack, but is anything but.

Devotion & Doubt is one of the moodiest, darkest, yet most heartfelt and affecting records that I have.

I wouldn't miss a show with him & M Ward. Ward's 2003 record is something that I got late, but sure am glad I checked out.

I liked him when he supported Lambchop. That album, transfiguration of vincent, is pretty good, though.
Didn't you used to hate this guy?

Errr lets see……..

M. Ward…. The Vincent album took a while to grow on me. It is a bit slower than my usual likes, but then maybe I am ageing into it. I still dont recall saying I hated him. I did like the show he did with lambchop and Matt Pond about two years ago today…..

As for the Penis Brothers, I just vehmently thought that Mankie would not like the CD. I was right. I also thought they were better live though. I bit less wimpy.
