One of my favorite records of the last decade came from Splitsville, a little heard band outside of the power pop scene. Anyways, you can tell the band members grew up listening to Queen, KISS, The Beatles, Beach Boys etc, but they were able to bring those influences together and still create a sound of their own. They also recorded the best Coldplay/Keane song I've ever heard.
which album? the first? and which is the Coldplay/Keane song you speak of?
One of Freddie Mercury's gifts was his ability to be absurdly flamboyant and theatrical but to emote Humanity rather than gayness - he captured and released feelings that transcended the banality of sexual preference.

yeah . . . he hid his gayness to the point of not ruining the band, that not even brian may knew. now that's transcedence.
Not to dwell on it, but wasn't Freddie bisexual rather than gay?

Hey walkie - Thanks for the vote of confidence on my thread
if you seek the Fat Bottomed Girls, I suggest finding the NSFW version of "Bicycle Race" video.
and in terms of keyboard driven pop ballads, I contend that Splitsville "Sasha" tops the output of Coldplay/keane

kosmo . . . i could proclaim some more gay shit if you want to spice up the place.
Well it appears that I hit it out of the ballpark with the first choice, beside this exercise makes for a good mix CD anyways…
Consider "Work For Food" by Dramarama.

I'm going through a bit of a Queen obsession at the moment, primarily because I was in a particularly grumpy mood the other day while driving to the Metro and that new classic rock station served up "Killer Queen" and it completely changed my mood. So I've blasting some Queen greatest hits in the car, for the short trips around the hood.
It dawned on me that a whole lot of Indie Rock bands could use more inspiration from Queen. Where is the swagger, the hooks, the soaring vocals, when was the last time you air drummed to a Indie Rock band.
BINGO!
I tend to see it as they could use inspiration from ACDC but for a lot of the same reasons..
ACDC recorded maybe five or six good songs, and basically rewrote those songs over and over after that.
