interesting layout, with the new section on the west side of columbus. second entrance is good.
looks like there is one less stage. usually they have one where the "uncorked" wine bar is.

So what they've added is that front section with main entrance, green street and Perry's? But end to end, it's the same length, yes?

That's what she said.

yup, you've pretty much summed it up. same hike from mainstage #1 to mainstage #2.

It was pretty good. Never seen them with Neko Case so that was the first time. Looks like it's going to be a nice day. Great for all three days ;D

Day 1 was pretty good. The weather was nice and should be good again today. Saw a lot of bands. I didn't get to check out the DJ stage still need to figure out where the hell it's at. They made changes this year so it's a little bit bigger, so means more walking to try and cover bands you want to see. Highlights for me were Matt & Kim, Hotchip, and The Walkmen. The Strokes were one of the headliners and Lady Gaga was the other. The Strokes were ok. I just don't see how they can be a headliner. They played all their hits and were done like in 45 mins. I thought about running over to see a little bit of Lady Gaga just to see how it was but decided not to. Here is a review I found on the Lolla board of her show. Quite funny ;D
WHY?!!!!!!!?!?!?!/!?!?!?! Why the hell did I buy into the hype? I am never one to let marketing really influence my decision making process but for some reason I was intrigued. What was I hoping to get from seeing that? I know nothing about her except she is for some reason the biggest thing in music right now. Usually that means shit to me but I was caught by curiosity. Is there something that I am just not seeing? After hearing about the elaborate stage production that they were dishing out for her this year I really was interested to see what was going to happen on stage. What happened was pure utter garbage. This isn't even the music I am talking about by the way, the songs are pretty decent pop dance songs. It's the lack of any realness that bothered me the most. Great fucking intro Ga Ga. We get to look at a curtain for 5 minutes while your cd plays. Awesome. Now I figured there would be backing tracks and barely any "real" live singing so I can over look that. What bothered me I think the most was the blood curling screams and attempts to pump up the crowd with the, for example, "Let's hear it for equal RIIIIIIGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!" chants. Hey, I'm all for equal rights and I am all for trying to pump the crowd, but at least try and make it seem somewhat real rather than "this is the point in the show where I say something to get a cheer from the crowd" It didn't feel real. it felt like while rehearsing for this show you probably went over those lines like 50 times at those specific moments in the show. I guess that sort of thing works on high school girls and gay guys who live in some sort of La LA land. To me, it just seemed like a failed attempt at trying to seem like she is some kind of rebel or hero to the masses. She is not.
Also, the stage show wasn't really anything that over the top. Maybe my idea of over the top is greater than some (i.e. Roger Waters) but nothing about that show had me say "wow" The "monster" on stage looked like a drop cloth with spot lights. It reminded me of Eddie from Iron Maiden if Eddie from Iron Maiden was a fucking roadie with a bed sheet over his fucking head. The sparklers blasting from where her penis used to be was a page out of Blackie Lawless's school of shock and awe. Only thing different was that Blackie Lawless actually shocked and awed people(for those of you reading this who have no idea what Iron Maiden or who Blackie Lawless is, you probably already hate what I have written… go do some homework) Also, what the hell was with the 5 minute long breaks between songs. Costume changes? OK, fine, I'm all about some theatrics (it was the main reason why I went to this stupid show) but give the audience something to be entertained by during that time. Everyone around me, even fans, would start chatting and have conversations and at no point seemed fully invested into the show.
"How can we make Ga Ga's show 2 hours?"
"We can have 45 minutes of downtime."
DONE!!!!!
Finally, like I said, I really know nothing about GaGa but I was willing to not see The Strokes because I had faith that she would actually be worth all of the hype and media attention. And I am not mad that I didn't see The Strokes (which I would have enjoyed) rather I am furious that I actually watched Gaga with the thought that "It's gonna get better. It has to get better." Well, it didn't. It was absolute pre-fabricated pop garbage that the corporate machine is churling out as fast as possible to make as much fucking money as humanly possible because a majority of the human public are fucking morons and need to be spoon-fed a healthy diet of shit. I was one of those morons last night but I learned my lesson. As Chuck D and Flava Flav say "DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!!!"

The highlight of the weekend for me was a nearly naked Lady Gaga stage diving 50 feet from me during Semi-Precious Weapons set.
The lowlight was seeing how far Perry Farrell has fallen. During his DJ set with Chris Cox he brought out his new wife and flanked by two singer/dancers, she sang "Call Me" by Blondie while Perry, in the back, was beaming and smiling like a mentally challenged 10 year-old who's just seen his first naked woman. I mean, even Ice-T wouldn't do that with Coco.
The Strokes were good, but short. They were lethal on "Juicebox." But I'm sorry to say, I don't think they can stand each other now. I wouldn't be surprised if they never make another album and just break up.

Anybody see Soundgarden? Curious as to how that reunion set turned out…
WOW. That Lady Gaga stage dive was just BAD. Could someone explain to me why she's not on the road to Courtney Love-ville?
That's not a stage dive. That's… well, I don't know what it is, but its not a fucking stage dive.
It's more like a stage flop onto the audience in the 2nd row.

New Pornos, Stars, Metric, Arcade Fire were all highlights. Go Canada. Mumford and Sons were good as well. Soundgarden kicked ass, very happy to see them play so well, even if they still fucking hate each other.
You could look at the line-up and easily pick up the low-lights. But was very disappointed with Empire of the Sun, who was expecting more from. Their show was impressive, but their music may have been completely canned. Too bad, though playing the woods might not be the best place to see them.

Well, I was hoping for a naked stagedive from Neko Case during the New Pornograpehrs set but we take what we can get, don't we?

Good:
All the headliners I saw (Arcade Fire, Strokes - even though they kind of mailed it in, Green Day)
Mumford and Sons
Social D
New Pornographers
Gogol Bordello
Frightened Rabbit
Temper Trap
Not so much:
Drive By Truckers
The xx - I like the record well enough but it doesn't work on a hot sunny festival afternoon.
Dirty Projectors
Went to the Blitzen Trapper aftershow on Saturday night, which was a nice palate cleanser after Green Day. Great venue too.
Expanding out to Columbus Ave was a great idea. Never had to wait for a beer or a bathroom and didn't have the crush around the fountain getting from one side to the other.

Did you see their whole set?
They came out for an encore. It was THAT great.

I am admittedly not a big fan to start with…a little too "aesthetic" for me.

i watched 2 songs on youtube, and it looked like what i'd expect - live guitars & vocals, an occasional synth, and just about everything else sequenced (slightly different than purely canned, but i'm splitting hairs). it's dance music. it wasn't written live, so that they chose not to interpret it live is understandable.
they could have used a live drummer, but that's dicey for EDM. most electronic acts (like thievery corp in recent years) don't use a live drummer because a human can't play evenly and predictably enough.
and personally, i think a dance party under the trees is an awesome idea, mostly because i've been at some great EMD parties in the forest. not to say that lolla's interpretation of that concept was successful…
What a great weekend. All the freaking canadian bands were awesome.
The New Pornographers
Stars
Metric
Arcade Fire
My favs from the weekend were Matt & Kim, The Cribs, Green Day, Health, and Arcade Fire. Arcade Fire put on a very good set. I was to the far left and pretty close. I was there during MGMT which was meh. A lot of the people ate that shit up when they were on. When Kids was played everyone started rushing forward like it was a must see thing, annoying. I'm hoping those golden tickets go on sale soon again like last year ;D
