You do not have walls? Weird…
you'd be surprised how hard it is to find a wall to hang things on

unfortunately aesthetics and lack of basement or mancave make hanging posters for rock shows impossible
and my 49% vote on all decorating decisions is a factor

Yeah, I got all annoyed at this woman.
930 is and always has been great to black performers (and concert goers)
there was major representation in just about every display there
and they weren't just token things, they were prominent

Not to mention the entire video board/section dedicated solely to gogo and in the green room there was a cutout of Chuck Brown and the hair dryer + story of James Brown! Plus a cool sign for George Clinton's dressing room that I liked a lot ;D
Some people just like to stir shit up. It wasn't like this was about Jazz in DC and snubbing Duke Ellington or something. Come on.

Real talk - I'm a white gal from rural mountain Maryland. The 930 club was how I learned about Go-go and Chuck Brown when I was a teenager. The lady who lodged that complaint about the exhibit has no clue how much of a multicultural place the club is. It's more than just black or white acts, it's about the fact the venue was and still is a place to learn new music, meet new people and all sorts of things. Plus, I don't know about anyone else, but I feel the crowds I saw last night at the exhibit displayed loudly just how diverse the club is in terms of its history, culture, roots, etc.
Here's the thing that pisses me off… I'm cool about talking about race, but this lady should've checked her privilege at the door. According to the article WAMU published - yeah they did an interview with her- she saw the exhibit as part of a VIP thing on Tuesday. Per a few club friends I talked to last night - Tuesday night was huge VIP as in the Obamas were there. So I'm doing the math and find it really pompous that considering all the hard work the staph put into this and the fact she was there when the President and the mayor and their families were there - who the hell is she to say crap? I'm not trying to stir anything up. I'm just annoyed how easy it is for someone with an ego to get this attention especially since last night felt like a celebration of everything I love about DC - the 930 club, punk and go-go.

I don't think it was an article.. I think it was just somebody's stupid comment on the 930 Facebook page..
Anyways, moving on to important things.. there was a Ween item at the World's Fair Yada.. so you must go.

that person is a complete idiot….. it is true there wasn't much in the way of neo-soul -although I did not get to watch the final video which would have that (they were ushering us on because we were the last group) which is what the writer is into but I don't think you have jill scott or erykah badu playing there all the time! if you look at the acts that played the most there they are pretty much white.. except for chuck brown and George Clinton who were both featured extensively
I mean were 50% of the acts that played the 930 club in the 80s black? I don't think so. but to say gogo was not represented would be crazy… its not whitewashing its history but trying to be faithful to it… if you went there and 50% of the photos/videos etc were of black artists well that would not be representative of its history
the city paper article about the 930 club thing has a ton of stuff devoted to go go, George Clinton (alex MacKaye names it his favorite show and has a paragraph telling why)…thievery talks about the skatalites who are black and it goes on and on .. someone talks about seeing Marion Barry before a Public Enemy show…
the closing act at the 930 club's 30th anniversary fest was troublefunk…
and punk is no exclusively white either… what about bad brains?
to me this writer just is into neosoul and didn't think shows she went to were represented but the shows she went to probably account for .1% of the shows the 930 has hosted .. I mean 35 years.. how many shows must that be? like 10,000??? so not every show you go to is going to be there.. and there werea ton of acts that I did not see anywhere but that is inevitable..
frankly, if someone was going to try to stir something up I think the Latino angle would be way better… there was nothing about Latino artists cause they never play there and they should play more often but that is a different story…
I mean you just can't represent every black act in an exhibit about 35 years and while I'm no expert I would be surprised if black acts constituted more than 5% of shows at the 930… I think if anything the 930 club over emphasized them because it is a DC club and these acts have had an outsized influence on DC… everybody knows DC is chocolate city and the headquarters of George Clinton etc etc..
I'm glad the 930 club has decided not to respond to this idiocy but it might be nice to fly down Chuck D or something and ask him what he honestly thinks.. I have a feeling you'd get no complaints from him.

another better case could be made- but I will not as I thought the exhibit was great and representative- for international music being underrepresented in the "world capital"…DC is a very international city.. where was the international music?
I will admit I dont' think I saw much reference to Toots and I would have liked that.. but maybe I missed that.. but listen you are not going to get everything…

I saw a set list …by said PE set list
I didn't see any video or brown paraphernalia
That top ten is crazy and cool at the same time
TMBG I would have never guessed, as well as the Roots
The Rev comes in pretty high, being from TX and all
No one will have a chance at taking out the Slickee boys (who I've never seen)
and speaking of GWAR, I can't believe they didn't have any video of that spectacle
guess not really unique to the club, but as we can see from the list, regulars
I will say Alternative Country was really poorly represented. :P……

yes I noticed country/alternative country was underepresented.. was there any mention of johnny cash? I did not see the last video…wilco/son volt/steve earle/lucinda williams… i did see an old 97s set lists
the set lists they seemed to have started collecting only recently which is a shame…. although the dylan one was from one of his shows in 97 or 98…..both of which i saw…i really want that set list too….
maybe cause we were the last group.. i did not see any screen printing going on….maybe i just missed it…
they had a tape of minor threat's first show??? is that circulating?
obviously some of the video footage is very interesting…
