Same advice to you as I gave to Julian…I would duck if I were you.
We've been through this here before…

You're wrong, but that's OK. I ride my bike to work and back on most days.

That was her.
I used to work for a bike/ped/transit oriented non profit and used to break it down with her sometimes. She was such a zealot….never good for any cause.

the whole bike rental idea was attempted in my hometown. i think this version as described will work better - the ID card keeps people accountable for the bikes. in my hometown, they were free to ride. find one, ride it, leave it wherever. guess how long it took before all the bikes were stolen?

The crappy part of this whole story is that it's reviving all of the drivers vs. bikers battles. The comment section on the Post's site has, naturally, descended into a pissing match and it is so depressing.
As someone who's been a daily bike commuter for years, I naturally fall on the side of the cyclists. Every morning and evening, I'm dodging motherfuckers who don't use their turn signals, don't look where they're going, drive in the bike lanes, pull sudden and immediate U-turns, throw open their car door without looking, and yell shit at me. (Anecdotal factoid: the vast majority of cars who drive like dicks and yell like dicks are SUVs from Maryland.) It's unreal, and I've stopped counting how many times I've avoided serious injury or death by inches.
The fact is, to survive as a bike commuter, you have to assume that every car is being driven by some dipshit who's not paying any attention at all. I am very quick to kick the hell out of any car that needs a good kicking, and you'd be surprised how many times it happens. It's kind of become like my morning coffee.
Right or wrong, driver or biker, this is a real sad story.

There are two kinds of cyclists on city streets. There's bike-commuters and there's the ignorant pricks known as bike messengers. Unfortunately, because of the bike messengers, cyclists in general are treated with contempt by the people in cars. Cyclists tend to treat all drivers with contempt because of the pricks who don't know how to use turn signals (which is actually a life or death issue for cyclists) or don't realize that cyclists have AS MUCH RIGHT TO USE THE ROAD AS THEY DO
Walkon….you're way off on this one mate.

No wonder you're so angry. Holding in all that gas must hurt after awhile.

so your solution would be to pull all bikes off the roads because of crazy car drivers, despite bikes having as much right to be there as cars?
another fine example of walkonby logic.

The people commenting on that Washington Post article have confirmed for me, not for the first time, that most of the commenters on the Washington Post site are total idiots.
I would say that goes mostly for the anti-bike road rage posters, who seem to be saying that this girl got what she deserved, but also for many of the pro-bike people.
Most of the commenters expressed not a word of sympathy for the girl or her friends and family. They were too busy using her to try to make their point.
