looking forward to the price appreciation
Craker's little dive 1 bedroom is now going to be his retirement plan
Traffic will also increase…but hopefully most will just use the E-scooters
Also Long Island City is in fact in NYC in Queens and just across the East River from Manhattan…so 90 mins from my hometown
right in Ocasio-Cortez district..the irony of one the worlds largest corporations showing up in a Socialists district
I will say the opposition to amazon coming to your town is not the same as a Pro Sports stadium
a lot more money stays local and a lot more jobs
I think you do need to incentivize them with tax breaks, but the amout of taxes they will add to the coffers in just a few years in terms of employee taxes will surely make up over time…but what do I know

I am kind of glad it’s in the opposite corner of Arlington from me
Gotta say Crystal City can only improve as it is the most hideous part of Arlington by far….

hopefully this will turbo charge the Colombia Pike redevelopment
it's amazing that parts of CP haven't changed since the 50s/60s when it's right in Arlington and close to dc
I'm sure all our subsidized housing in my area has something to do with that

Meh. It's 25k jobs, but that's over 20 years. Also, the area has lost like 30k jobs in recent years.
I think it will overall be a good thing for the area, but I think the effects are being overstated. Traffic and housing affordability are already big problems. Maybe Amazon worsens it a little bit, but that would have happened as (non-Amazon) jobs came back to the area anyway. And again, this will be spread out over 20 years.

I understand residents of Seattle have some perks like 10 minute package delivery

also…for every 100K amazon employee (and there will be lots) who get jobs and move close to Arlington…
you get more employment down the food chain
the Uber drivers/dry cleaners/restaurants/real estate agents/dog walkers/Water Sommeliers and so on
Plus all the sales/property/income tax that trickles through all that as well
can't look at in a vacuum
plus we just got Nestle too
Also, the area has lost like 30k jobs in recent years.
what area? this area has been BOOMING for a decade
waaay more than most of the rest of the country
that's why we pay $9 for a miller lite draft

Man I think I am fairly progressive but I cannot get with the idea that such a huge company moving to Arlington is a bad or small thing…

I work in Crystal City and I'm dreading to think of what this will do to my commute. Hoping Amazon doesn't offer free parking to these new employees and they use public transportation.

The lost jobs were the govt agencies and defense jobs that got moved due to BRAC. Estimates are that Arlington lost ~30k directly and indirectly. Crystal City alone lost almost 1mn Sq ft of leased space due to BRAC. Amazon is taking only 400k to start.

Seems to me the "insiders" knew this was happening for a while. I'll take an Alamo Drafthouse though. Never been but I've heard good things.

I hear you but to start investing in a redevelopment project like that tells me some knew way in advance.

the area just south of Crystal City (potomac yards) has been in a MASSIVE redevelopment over the last decade and a metro stop is coming
so even with out Amazon…there was a lot going on right there
and it's inside the beltway about 1 mile from DC and DCA
redevelopment was going on with or without AMZ…now it's just gotten waaaay more competitive
