If we had a "Bands I Hold In Equal Esteem to The Clash", The Libertines would've been entry #1.
So where does Tommy Keene fit in all of this?

Thanks for asking.

There was a day last week when I was alternating between Songs from the Film and Hunter Keene (tommy's nephew) on drums on the new Matt Surfin' and Friends record.

About the same position as that drunk singer from Guided By Voices.

So, significantly better than Joe Strummer, then?

As far as the Clash goes (and I realize I'm late to the dance here), I've actually always thought that the Stranglers, the Damned, and the Buzzcocks were better bands. Though I have an extreme fondness for Joe Strummer and I think the band wrote some incredible songs, other than the first LP, every other one of their records had some flaws. If you were to put up the Damned's "Black Album" vs. "Sandanista", I'll take the Black Album any day of the week. Same thing with "Machine Gun Etiquette" over "London Calling", or "Strawberries" over "Combat Rock". But I know I'm probably in the minority.
Sandinista is amazing…

To each their own but I just don’t get the appeal of either the Stranglers or the Damned who do nothing for me

The Buzzcocks are pretty awesome though

I just think we got burnt out on the Clash and that when you take the songs out from the political and social events of their time they lose all context and power…

I would agree the Clash have not aged well…part of it is Strummer dying and Mick Jones not being much interested in their legacy

I appreciate that Clash for what they are. The reggae angle was interesting. To me, though, the Damned (and even the Stranglers) veered away from punk in a different direction and really embraced styles and their own techniques that made their music age better and with less "the only band that matters" hype. The Damned spawned stuff like the Replacements. Bob Stinson admitted to wanting to lift a bunch of Captain Sensible riffs. And the Stranglers were stubbornly uninterested in doing anything that categorized them with the other bands of that era, which to me is attractive. This pretty much sums up why I love the Stranglers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gfIgA-PYyQ ; I'm glad that the Clash had the success they did. They deserved it. But as time marches on, I am far more likely to put on "Strawberries" or "Machine Gun Etiquette" than I am to put on "Combat Rock". And I wish Strummer was still around. He seemed like a genuinely warm and nice guy.
NYC Mayor and Presidential Candidate Bill De Blasio really likes the Clash. So there Julian!
Favorite songs: London Calling - "beautiful album."
Also loves reggae and ska!
he is quoting Saint Joe Strummer: "Future is Unwritten"!!
Who else is all in for BDB!

He just fears Julian For The Future like all the other B-level candidates.

It's all so cringe-worthy, Kamla's was gross as well.

Thanks. If there ever was one hour of recorded television history that could simultaneously fellate me to the point of peak pleasure while irritating my wife to the point of threatening divorce, it is that show.
