If you dig jazz, hit up Iridium.
CBGB is just as shitty and run-down as you think it would be.
Tonic is fun.
Hammerstein Ballroom is nice.
Roseland is also cool.
Beacon is swell.
MSG and Radio City have a lot of history (RCMH even has elevator attendants).
Webster Hall is just ok.
Knitting Factory really is a bad venue.
Bowery Ballroom is alright.
Joe's Pub isn't bad. Not great though.
Apollo Theatre is scary at night.
Living Room is only satisfactory.

Site of one of my favorite shows – the Hoodoo Gurus sometime in the late 80s (I'm not good at remembering that stuff…). Good place.

There's also:
Club Rare
Delancy Lounge
Crash Mansion
All 3 have diverse lineups depending on the night of the week.
Rothko is back open? We were suppose to play a show there in Feb with Fixmer/McCarthy (Terrance Fixmer and Douglas McCarthy(Nizter Ebb)), but it was shut down the night before by the Fire Marshall.

I can put up with anything (…hmmm thinking Velvet Lounge) for the right band. I loved Knitting Factory - and couldn't care less about the bartenders…I've been ignored by the best of 'em. I LOVE the Hammerstein but some groups could be LOST there with the size/stage. I have a question: Anyone been to Tribeca Rock Club? How about Arlene's grocery? Size?

As for Arlene's Grocery, I've only ever seen friends' bands there–you know, the sort of bands that only a friend could love.
Oh and Jag…Cakeshop is really pretty cool. Record store/cafe by day, rock joint by night. It's on Ludlow, so right in the middle of the LES scene…which reminds me, has anyone mentioned Sin-E yet? One of the best spots in the city, especially when they bust out the $2 drink specials. One word of warning: what with the relative isolation of the neighborhood from convenient trains (the F? please!) and the plethora of after-hours watering holes, you may be hard-pressed to escape before dawn.
Arlene's has a website now…shows appear to be rotating vice regular schedule.
thanks for the others details - forgot about Sin-E.

I liked North Six a lot. It's the closest thing NYC has to the Black Cat. :)
