Hey, going to NYC in a few weekends, seeing Spamalot, wanted to catch a show while I was up there. Know about Bowery Ballroom and the more well known venues; any recs about smaller places to check out?
venues in NYC...
i love the Mercury Lounge. just get tix in advance cause it sells out a lot.
There's two that I've heard are pretty good….one is called "Center Park" or something like that, and the other "Madisons Garden Square"
;)
;)
another place i like to go is North Six in Brooklyn. not the best place to see a show, but the crowd is always entertaining to say the least, and the drinks are cheap (for NYC).
Piano's, Southpaw in Brooklyn, Rothko, Sin-E, the Delancey.

Southpaw in Brooklyn,
you can probably give the Cutting Room a miss, went there to see a friend do an industry showcase and beyond the cover there was a $10 minimum. and you would never know the place was owned by chris noth, seeing is there are not one but two pictures of him hanging on the walls…

i like tonic and webster hall (although bands at webster hall havent been sounding too great as of late).
the knit is my joint…1/9 downtown and all.
the places unmentioned as of yet:
Todd P (www.toddpnyc.com) is the MAN in brooklyn. all the house shows, crazed polish disco parties, outdoor freak-outs, etc. are his doing. check out the Narchitect Castle (formerly Mighty Robot), Club Exit, Glasshouse Gallery and Cake Shop. His own place, Llano Estacado, was raided by the cops (while I was there seeing Black Dice, actually…) and will be on the DL for a while…
Also Rothko and 12 Little Devils on the LES and The Hook in Red Hook.
Don't forget to say that walkie sent ya…

Hey Walkie, you been to asterisk yet? I've been there a few times, two were good, one sucked.
My friend Mike's band Chamisa Mesa might be right up your alley. They've played The Hook, Piano's, etc.

The Knitting Factory is one of the worst clubs I have ever been too. I have been there twice. It is such an akward building and the bar tenders couldn't be bothered. North Six is great and so is The Bowery. Warsaw is wonderful, but I don't think they have a regular schedule there. I have seen the Polyphonic Spree there on several occasions, and they serve polish beer and greasey polish food!
Walkie, how is the Cake Shop? Some band that I was interested in is playing there. I was just reading about that the other day and it sounded kind of interesting. Smallish with some halfway decent very new Shoegaze, Indie and other type bands. Struck me as having a bit of a Warehouse Next Door kind of vibe. But you know how you really don't know what a venue is like unless you've been there or have a good report.
How bout Irving Plaza? I may head up to see Ted Leo in a few weeks…
