well, "mexican food" tends to vary wildly once you hit the southwest, that is, texas, new mexico, arizona, california and colorado.

there really isn't any "good" mexican restaurants in this area. . .now, if you want south or central american. . that's different.

lauriol plaza satisfies my mexican food craving.
Rosa Mexicano.

that place is awful. . .other than the guacamole, which is top notch.
Rio Grande sucks for vegetarians.
Taqueria Poblano is my favorite.

boo-hoo. other than californian, most mexican would suck for vegetarians because lard is used extensively.

Polly's is also great, but that place got expensive for what it is…. Both, though, are on U Street east of 14th.
Has anyone been recently? I used to enjoy it, but the last two times there were horrible and expensive. I'd rather go to lauriol plaza its food is unquantifiably better and it is cheaper.
Hmmmmmmm…..interesting, I remember meeting a couple of board members there before a show, and made a similar comment about Polly's on this very board the following day….only to be accused of being a grumpy old tight arse!

That is without doubt. Their prices have gone up a fair bit since you were here. One time there was a tomato shortage and they were charging $2 for a slice of tomato to go with a burger.

NEVER AGAIN.

Otherwise I am sure I remember Pollys salad being $9, the last time I was there it was $12. Lauriol salads have not gone up in that time, they are still under $10…..

As for the burgers….. they are not as good as they used to be, and they are more expensive than nicer places, like clydes.
Ben's Chili Bowl – overrated and only worth it if there's not a mob scene
Lauriol Plaza – mediocre tex-mex fare, a favorite locale of the type of herd-following people who'll go to a restaurant simply because there's a line outside, and more importantly for this thread, nowhere near the 9:30 club
Polly's – has gone way downhill
Black Cat – decent lasagna, burgers, vegan food

if you're the adventurous type, there's a carryout restaurant on 9th Street just south of U which has great Moroccan food at a reasonable price, as well as more standard fare. There's a Pakistani carryout place on U Street, somewhere near 13th, which has some good spicy south Asian food as well as the obligatory giant pizza slice. Decent Ethiopian food at 11th and U. There are a bunch of decent restaurant choices nearby but I think the original questioner is looking for something cheap and quick. :)
five guys burgers on georgia is an option…

and speaking of mexican how about Toucan Taco in Laurel…
Ya know, I'll have to check that out – it never occurs to me to head east (to Georgia Ave) instead of west, when in search of food. I guess you could say Georgia's not on my mind!
the islander on 12th and u. good carribbean food. i recommend the shrimp roti and homemade ginger beer, or sorrel drink. cheap too.
Coppi's.

But where would you eat carryout if you're on the way to the Club? Not an area with lovely benches along the streets….

YUM….though it can be crowded and it's not quick. And I wouldn't call it cheap (though it's not expensive, really…)
