Frank/Charles said in NME it was because Lovering's dad just died.

It looked like more than drinking in the movie and they called it a 'substance abuse' that he agreed to curtail.

Lars gets a bad rap for the whole Napster thing, for his "tin can" sound on St. Anger, and because he's kind of a elf-douche. But there's no fucking with his drumming on Metallica's first four albums, especially Master of Puppets.
