Wrens Roll Call

wrens have their act together but i wasnt into them. i in fact liked the originality of the Nein, (or Nyet if they play in russia). yes what a clever name . the wrens to me seem to appeal to that puke segment of society that likes "Friends" that are also like the characters on friends. rollins' mp3 on tv comes to mind "GOSH, what are we going to do about her shoes?! -- Fuck!!" (press ctrl+f on "rollins") in fact, some douchbag turd nudged me at the bar as i was getting plenty drunk due to my female problems [no, not her UTI, thats not the "problem" ] he was all georgetowny with his prep school look in his 'look at me how laidback i am i have my dress shirt untucked' look. asked me if they were the the band formerly known as the Swallows - the Wrens then waving his arm in the air like, um, like Ike Turner at a black power rally (or swinging at tina), or, perhaps as if he was at an ozzy concert… after he just asked if it was the wrens , then acting like he was a loyal follower for ages… i couldnt bare to look at the guy in some sort of schadenfraude way…god, listen to me ramble [relax, it's intentional, chief– it's my schtick] i need to not drink so much. does anyone find it retarded to have the state of nj displayed as part of your band image? bon jersey did it and i hate bon jersey, they blow big time.
and im from jersey. i wanted to go up to the Pigeons at their merchandise table and point at sussex county nj on the tshirt and say "hey im from here!" and theyd say "we're from secaucus" is what i guess theyd say. and i'd go "oh" , with dead loook on my face. because secaucus sucks. its off rt3. u go thru Sec to get to lincoln tunnel into nyc, whoopee. im sure theyr fine musicians and more power to 'em if it works. i hope they grab all the cash from the princetoneys and georgetowneys that they can. i just couldnt make myself sing along even if i wouldve had to ape the lyrics. is it pop? is it alternaive? look out its the gin blossoms!
does anybody have the set list from last night?
i really wanted to go to this; but my friends and i couldn't get rides and are not allowed to metro down there at night…

how was it, though?
i went the last time they were here and the show was phenomenal but we had a terrible time getting in.
i remember telling myself that the day the wrens sold out the black cat would be the day skittles really did fall from the sky. but basically; the show sold out about two people in front of us in line (and it was freezing outside!). since that day, i have also been buying my black cat tickets waaay in advance. i had felt really bad, too, because we had brought a friend of ours for her birthday and she didn't know at the time but army of me were going to say happy birthday to her during their set. we DID end up getting in though; i called a friend who told me that they usually opened up some more tickets after the second act. i just remember sitting in food for thought for an hour or two and thinking about how we weren't going to get in and how much it was going to suck and how we were ruining her birthday. . . . . .
but then they opened up like nine tickets and we got four of 'em and we went up right after army of me started and danced a lot and had fun. like, a million.

and the wrens had played so well…such a great show…

but YES; now that my tangent is through with, do tell about last night…

that was the best post ive seen on here in ages …
friday was great. the sound was so much better than the last time they played the bc. i don't have the setlist but i don't think they played anything off their old albums. it was all stuff from the meadowlands.
It was an absolutely fantastic show. I loved them on the backstage back in November 2003, but was less dazzled by their last mainstage show this past February.

Two reasons this one kicked ass (again) – sound was better, and I moved up closer to the stage where you can be completely absorbed by the band and fans who love them. Alas, like last time upstairs, if you're standing near the back, there's a LOT of chatter. And that bodes poorly for the Wrens because so many of their songs start out so softly and lovely…

These guys love to play, give it all they've got, and just shake the place apart. I love them love them. And I thought the Jersey shirts were bitchin'.
"meadowlands"! [shaking head] i can only guess that this band is a friggin joke in nj. there is nothing hip or cool or interesting about the meadowlands. do u out of towners know that?! the meadowlands is a stadium. it like any dc band naming its album "RFK" and even thats too cool, er um "Convention Center" is more like it. hell, the only thing bout the "Meadowlands" is the running joke in NY/NJ area that jimmy hoffa is buried under the goal post. [does anybody kno who jimmy hoffa is anymore?] he was a teamster pres who disappeared after a long running er um 'feud' w the mob. the m'lands is in secaucus. a shitty superfund site thats a pit stop to the lincoln tunnel to nyc. if this is the only thing one can find interesting and unique in nj is this its really pathetic. [my guess is that they r trying to be all springstEIny but ended up more 'bon jersey']. shall i provide pix, would that do it? how DID these people get to any popularity and have people going apeshit over their image. this mostly how u see secaucus, a friggin waste dump and a highway
oh beautiful, welcome to the meadowlands folks
this accurately depicts the whole secaucus and meadowlands area [see that haze? thats not a dirty camera lens. thats filth so thick you could slice it. and the cameramans feet probably rotted off after taking this shot.] toss in some shitty lower middle class houses and the people in them who have a soaring cancer rate im sure [hold your nose and i hope u hav insurance]
NJ. ah where the air smells like rotten cheese. come to think of it this is pretty cool. why dont the Blue Tits be honest about NJ instead of fabricating a flase image of it and put some thing cool like a guy with a gas mask and um an EPA fullbody suit on with him trudging thru the swamps with a geiger counter-looking device in hand. now THAT would be cool!
Essex County rulez, bitches.

I never ever say this on here, but I'm really tempted to tell you to shut up….

Why does it need to be hip or cool or interesting? That's your hangup. It's where they live. That's all. And they sing songs about the simpleness of how complicated everyday, normal life is. They are being honest about it – New Jersey is fascinating by having it all.
- The dirtiness and toughness of urban life along the turnpike and Route 1,
- miles and miles and miles of amazing farmland that yields the tastiest tomatos and corn you'll ever have,
- "Ice Storm" type suburbs with interesting and boring lives in big houses,
- Places like Trenton, and Places like Princeton.

I think it's time you deal with your issues, Muschi.

the wrens thread, resurrected from the dead.

ever notice how as over the hill bands [that ought to move on and leave room for new artists] as they get older they all don shades to cover their real age?

i think bon jersey himself is looking up saying " 'sup ". well isnt that just cool. or maybe his geritol just kicked in, who knows.

Why is this in the Wrens thread? If there's an insinuation that the Wrens are one of those bands that should move on to make room, that's about as much bullshit as I've ever read on this board. "Meadowlands" is a revelation of an album, and their shows are tearing it up.

Of course, this is also probably just muschi trying to stir the pot. It may seem that I've been stirred, but not really.
well, then the question is do u like your pot stirred?

i put bon joovi on here bc i referred to them when i commented on the The Geese.

"ooooooooo sheeee's a lil runaway!"
Anyone else go this past Saturday? It was great. Really great.

Have I mentioned recently that Patrick Foster is my favorite Post reviewer?

The Wrens, Flying Through a Little Turbulence

Monday, October 30, 2006; Page C04

At the Black Cat Saturday night, a boisterous crowd cheered the Wrens on to a hard-fought victory: The quartet overcame a messy sound mix and some loose playing with typical passion, rallying themselves – and their die-hard followers – to several inspiring peaks.

And there's always their New Jersey indie-rock mystique, in the long tradition of, say, Haledon's the Feelies, who fell apart in 1991 just around the time the Wrens were beginning their career not too far away in Secaucus.

Except for the shaky opening cover of Okkervil River's "It Ends With a Fall" and a meandering encore, the 90-minute set was constructed as a monument to the Wrens' sparkling third album, 2003's "The Meadowlands." With vocals split between bassist Kevin Whelan and guitarist Charles Bissell, every indie rock muscle was tightened for the clanging, anthemic choruses to such songs as "Happy," "Everyone Choose Sides" and "Built In Girls."

The group let the crowd in on the fun, cramming the stage full of people to play percussion on the yearning "Boys, You Won't" and having two piano-playing fans tickle the ivories on "Hopeless." And if harsh treble and occasional shrieks of feedback sent grimaces through the audience, in the end it allowed both the Wrens and their supporters to relish a little more the shout-along that was "Faster Gun"; it hadn't been easy, but they all got where they needed to be.

Missed it, but I'm glad it was great (had to go to a halloween party in Dupont, ugh).

That review was brief but very good. Maybe the DCist reviewers should take note…their reviews are always long.

Really great. I just emailed the band to tell them they are magical and their show was blissful.
That was my first time seeing the Wrens live in person. I've heard much about them being a great band to see in concert and they didn't dissappointed. I even did something I rarely do at shows - I bought their t-shirt. Here's hoping they can all quit their day jobs and get back down here for another show.
This was my second time seeing them. I think they're an incredibly under rated band. While they weren't as tight this time around, or maybe the sound was just off, they still rawk the stage like not many other bands. And being on stage for "This Boy Is Exhausted" was a treat!
