Now more than ever do I regret not seeing that James Brown/Chuck Brown show at 9:30…. I knew I'd hate myself this Christmas.
Bummer.
Oh and this does merit it's own post.

Sad news.
Cue Rhett to chime in with the shortcomings, failures and character defects of the deceased. And to also point out that it was somehow his fault.

Where does Surly Bonds find these images?
My only encouter with the Godfather of Soul was a sold-out show at the 930 my friend and I snuck into a few years back without paying (sorry Seth). It was towards the end of the night and he was doing this extended encore, and the level of energy in that room was beyond belief. I expected people to start writhing on the floor and speaking in tongues at any moment. I regret I never got to see a full set, and in particular that show with Chuck Brown must've been out of this world. Rest in peace.

Those things speak for themselves. I'm sure when I die, you'll be the first to chime in on those things about me. ;)

RIP James Brown.
I never got to see the man play, but I was at The Raven one evening and James Brown's Big Payback came on. Everyone in the bar was nodding their heads in time.

my regret was never going to the 2002 HFS Nutcracker when they had James Brown play with The Pietasters. I heard it was a fucking awesome set. I also do regret not seeing the Chuck Brown vs. James Brown show.
I give huge props to the Godfather. He was and still is Soul Brother Number 1. He basically created R&B and Funk. I agree that there will never be another person like him. He was the hardest working man in show business. I wish him a well deserve rest. I'm sure he's going to have a blast in heaven. He's probably giving Elvis a run for his money haha.

Other than the show a few years back on new years eve eve, I saw him in Charlottesville earlier this year. My friend Kim and I had front row dead center seats. At the end of the show, a grandmother with her maybe 3 year old grandson worked their way up front. James motioned for the boy to come up on stage. We lifted him up there and this kid and James danced for a minute or two together. The kid had the moves DOWN… James looked liek he was enjoying that oart of the show more than anything else. Quite a few people got pictures and made sure the grandmother got the info on how to get them. It was a fantastic show. I am very glad I got to mark "See James Brown in concert" off of my to-do list.

I got to see him 4 times, each one was amazing. That man could put on a show!
Years ago I was tending bar at a local hotel. It was after closing and one of the busboys came up to me, asking me if I had a Godfather. Turns out, James Brown was our guest that night and had come to the dining room at about 2 in the morning with his entire entourage, in search of soup. The hotel manager just about had a stroke and nuked soup for everyone. The entourage ate their soup, tipped very handsomely, and went to their suite, then called for room service about 20 minutes later. They wanted 4 pots of coffee. They tipped the busboy $50 on the coffee. It was really, really wild counting out my bank and watching James Brown eat soup at 2 in the morning!

She and her grandson had seats about 4-5 rows back on the aisle. During the last song they were standing in the aisle about in line with the front row. All of us up front kept waving them over to come on up front. She was kind of hesitant at first in kind of that grandmotherly way. He came right on over when he saw me waving him up and then she came along. It was then that JB saw them and had him passed up onto the stage. The grandmother was pretty much in tears. The boy looked good up there all decked out in a ncie suit. While the kid didnt grasp the full meaning of the moment (he was dancing his ass off and having a lot of fun), the grandmother knew full well what that moment meant. I am sure that some day he will look back on that and talk about the day he and his grandmother went to see Mister James Brown together… I was somethign that was special for everyone in attendance that night.
