Beckham agrees to join Real Madrid

David Beckham has agreed to sign a four year contract with Real Madrid, scuppering Barcelona's hopes of luring the England skipper to the Nou Camp.

A Spanish radio station revealed that the two clubs would confirm the details of the deal later on Tuesday evening.

Beckham is reported to be moving to the Bernabeu for a fee of between 25 and 30 milliosn euros - around £20million. He will sign the contract on July 2, the day after he is scheduled for a medical in Spain.

Radio Marca said the deal will be confirmed later today. It had ben reported that the deal was struck as long ago as May 12.


The midfielder, currently on his way to Japan for a promotional tour, will reportedly be paid £90,000-a-week.

What the fuck! I guess next year Barcelona will have to kick Beckham's ass as well. Too many stars for Real Madrid, it is going to be fun winning the Spanish league next year. Difficult, but there is new hope in the city. I hope we finally start recovering from this long disease that has affected us for over 7 years. Any chance that Henry might want to leave Arsenal?

No, but Figo may be going to Inter to make room for Becks and to finalize the deal for Ronaldo (apparently Real still owes some money….).

Real Madrid was in a huge financial crisis around 6 years ago (Real didn't win any Champions League / European Cup between the late sixties and 1998), then they sold some land they owned (it has never been clear how they got out so fast and well from the debt) and started to buy Roberto Carlos, Figo, Zidane, Ronaldo, and now Beckham….

I still think that Figo has never played as well in Madrid as he played before in Portugal and Barcelona. Zidane is becoming old and the defense of Real Madrid sucks. Unless they get Vieira, they still have a big deficit in the defense line.

I am sorry but I am glad to see Figo being treated this way, what he did to Barcelona three years ago was awful.

But the bottom line is…. Beckham will do nothing for Real on the field. He can take free kicks… so what! Carlos will embarrass him at the only thing he does really well. Zidane, Figo… aged, but will only play down with Beckham on the field… but off the field, ahhh… there's the rub. Just think of the Jersey's, the TV viewers… Beckham will pay for his salary and half the rest of the team… If only Real can find a place for him that won't cause too much harm.

That really is a load of bollocks and just demonstrates that you know nothing about the player….or football for that matter

He has the best foot for free kicks in the world, no question, but he also passes the ball with accuracy that nobody else can even come close to, and a striker needs the ball at his feet to put it in the net, not 6" behind him. Just his presence on the field enables the team to control the ball in midfield and kill most attacks before they get to the fullbacks (thankfuly for United!) The only other player in the world who is better than Beck's at taking charge of the midfield is Roy Keane. England are twice the team they were since Beckham was given the captain's armband, so his leadership on the field and in the locker room is vital.

Real Madrid are a much better team with him and United are now a weaker team without him…Madrid win!! 25mil quid is a steal for the man…and I hope the twats in the front office and the prawn sandwich eating shareholders at Old Trafford are happy.

I hope Beckham scores the winning goal to put United out of the Champions League next season just to shove it up their arses….this move was not about football, it's all about money, and Manchester United is so wealthy that the 25mil is a mere drop in the bucket for them. I hope Kenyon and Ferguson choke on the champagne they drink to celebrate all the money they just made for the shareholders.

If it was a choice between Ferguson and Beckham leaving, it should've been Ferguson, let him go manage his beloved Celtic…Fergie was a part of United's glorious past and Beckham should still be a part of United's glorious future.

To add insult to injury, the signing is being done on my birthday! :(

Even Roberto Carlos doesn't agree with you here. He joked about maybe being able to kick a few now that Becks was in town. He hasn't has a big free kick since 1997 for Brazil against France. He did get to see Becks wiz one right past his head and into the net in the second leg of the champions league though.

No you don't. Or at least you won't then. but if anybody from Real should beat United, I too hope that it's Becks on a free kick and that he turns and smiles at Fergie and gives him a little mock kiss like the Turkey game.

I'm sorry brother. I feel your pain - Smackette is a Real supporter so I can't even ignore the transfer - she will remind how bad of a deal this was for United until I die.

She's in NY this week, and left a chant on my cell phone, thanking me for david beckham and announcing that United is now most Real fans favorite team (sung to the famous united chant thanking leeds for Cantona and mocking them by saying Leeds is our favorite team - I'm sure you've heard it). She wants a Beckham's Real jersey for her birthday - that's all she wants. It's not too late to cancel our impending move to SF is it?

BECKHAM WON'T BE TOURING THE USA WITH UNITED IF HE SIGNS ON JULY 2ND !!!!!!!!

A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO BOUGHT TICKETS TO SEE BECKHAM WILL BE VERY PISSED OFF.

And that's when it hits you….ABC 7 reported on the transfer last night (!!!!) and that was their point - no Beckham for the US tour. Serves 'em right. They're not United fans anyway. Will Ronaldino make up for that? Ha!

Hey smackie…..I just heard from home that the reason United sold Becks' now is because in March they tried to get him to sign a new contract to extend it beyond the two years he has left on this one, but Beckhams management team would not discuss it, so they decided to cash in on him now instead of letting him walk away without compensation next year.

I hope that's true, I won't feel so bad about him going if it is.

And who laughed last on that kick? Heck, sir alex didn't even start him (don't get me started on this one… just face it, there was no motive to keep him out unless he felt someone else could do a better job) and then he scores two meaningless goals. How many titles does Carlos have under his belt? (all that Becks dreams about) He has nothing to prove and is politicking for sure on that comment. Don't get me wrong.. I like Becks, Man U., and the whole EPL for that matter… but this isn't an "on field" move by any stretch. Now Man U. can afford much and many and put themselves back on the top of Europe.

We may disagree on Beckhams talent level, but the ONLY reason he was on the bench for that game is because the manager is an arrogant ego-maniac who was acting on a personal vendetta at the expense of the team. A brilliant manager yes, but his ego is his worst enemy.

The only title Carlos has that Becks does not is a World Cup, and Carlos owes none of that to Real. Becks joining Real will do little to help himself get that either.
